INVISIBLE CINEMA “SEA, SEE, SHE – TO WHOM I HAVE YET TO SEE”
HAPPENINGText: Taketo Oguchi
Japanese sound artist, evala has created projects trying to expand the “potential of sound” beyond the fields of music, art, urban planning and films all over the world under a project named “See by Your Ears”. His new work, “Sea, See, She – To Whom I Have Yet To See” “screened” at Spiral Hall for three days from January 24th.
This work is an invisible cinema where story is told only by sound by a musician, which is unique in the world. It is a new attempt to “see by ears” in the dark space using a three-dimensional sound system. It evokes human perception and draws stories from sounds. Just listening to the rich and abundant sound, it invites the audience to the forest, deep sea, and any space and time, then it creates infinite images in each emotional landscape.
I’ll avoid to mention about specific content of this work because I want you to check them by yourself. This work offers different experiences depending on the seating position by the three-dimensional stereo sound of 7.2.4 channel. However, different sounds can be heard in the same seat by shaking the head right and left. After listening in the dark for a while, you can recognize the space, and images linked to the sound emerge in the dark from the collage of various environmental sounds collected by field recording.
The experience in the dark remind us of “Dialog in the Dark”, but it gives a more sharpened feelings because this work focuses on hearing instead of using the five senses. Also due to the tension of being in the dark, the 70-minute show seems like a heartbeat.
The film attracted a lot of attention, so tickets were sold out on the last day and additional screening was arranged in haste. After the premiere of the world premiere in Japan, it will be screened overseas. You should savor the revolutionary experience.
