TERENCE CONRAN: MAKING MODERN BRITAIN
HAPPENINGText: Alma Reyes
Conran was a key innovator in the refurbishment of abandoned properties in the London Docklands. He established The Design Museum in 1989, located in this area (it relocated to the former Commonwealth Institute building in Kensington in 2016). The institution raised his achievements to the highest level, and has become today, a symbol of the thriving design industry, education and public awareness united together.
In the lower floor of the exhibition are installations of his office space, revealing personal items and collections, and Conran’s numerous publications. A section is also devoted to the Conran company’s presence in Japan, with the establishment of Conran Shop in 1994, the interior design of Ark Hills Club in Akasaka, and other building projects in Tokyo. Videos from collaborators narrate their work experience with Conran’s wide-ranged entrepreneurship.

A special exhibit of the limited-edition travel case Globe-Trotter (2019) depicts the emblematic blue theme with Conran’s playful sketches of travel memories. The suitcase marked the 25th anniversary of The Conran Shop’s debut in Japan.
The House Book (Mitchell Beazley Publishers) written by Terence
Along with the popular The House Book that Conran authored and published in 1974, and ranked as one of the top bestselling inspirational guides for interior designers and homeowners, other countless publications, retail shops, and building landmarks, his unrivaled contribution to modern design and heritage preservation will always be cherished.
