Toshihiko Shibuya is an artist who bases his creation in Sapporo, Hokkaido, and in his work searches for the resonance of art and location. Taking advantage of the snow country, he enthusiastically tries new expressions of art with the season of winter, snow, earth and nature. After “Snow Palette” obtained high recognition in foreign countries, his latest work “White Collection” was introduced as the first one-man show in the Gallery Monma Annex, Sapporo (from August 7th to 20th).

As he explains, this latest exhibit is the “summer version of Snow Palette.” “White Collection” also uses the technique of reflection from the light of luminous paint. The main characters of this work are all plants and creatures that are based on white, for example, gypsophila, the fluff of a dandelion, a fossil of ammonite, a skull of squirrel etc… From things around his usual life to rare things, the materials are varied, and everything is collected by the artist himself. Other than decolorizing some parts of those and making those hard, he did not add any process and kept their natural figures. The light from colorful luminous paint on the ceiling of the case reflects onto the materials and creates soft shadows.

This work captures the figures of plants and creatures as they are. It indicates to us once more the originality of shapes and the delicacy created by nature. The strength of the light from the luminous paint changes by weather and time, and thus the impression on the object is different each time. You can feel the slow passage of time through the color change.

His latest work “Generation (the origin)” will be shown at Harukayama Art Fort 2013 (Harukayama, Otaru) and Honbetsu Art Project 2013 ( former Sumitomo Honbetsu coal mine shaft in Mikasa city) in this autumn. The latest version of “Snow Palette” will be also exhibited at various places in Hokkaido this winter.

Don’t miss his enthusiastic new expression of art.
