BLUE MAN GROUP IN TOKYO
HAPPENINGText: Yurie Hatano
Quiet, mysterious and comical. A creative organization showing the rediculous but high-developed performance, Blue Man Group is finally coming to Japan.
Blue Man Group is a creative organization founded by Phil Stanton, Chris Wink, and Matt Goldman who started performance during the 1980s in New York City. The first show started in 1991 at the Astor Place Theatre.
Blue Man’s inorganic stage set, which has an element of abandoned house, is highly regarded also in the art scene. In fact, it appeared on museums like Guggenheim Museum in New York, and their collaboration became a big topic. In their show, those waste materials are used in a lively way as instruments and props.

Cleverly manipulating the above-mentioned waste materials, Blue Man shows totally new performance and also their unique sounds. The music by those original instruments has been released as CD “Audio” and nominated for the Grammy Awards.
Currently, Blue Man Group’s live shows can be seen in 8 cities in 3 different countries in the world. Japan had ever had their shows as “invitation of tour edition” for several months or “long run of Japan edition” by Japanese actors. “Blue Man Group in Tokyo” will be the one bringing all the performers and musicians from America, that is, it’s the first authentic long running show in Japan.
Blue Man Group’s performance has kept developing since its opening in New York, and this show in Japan wil be the latest version of it. The stage also has the scene like making a mock of the inhuman Internet society, and you will re-realize the substance of communication from the technology world which Blue Man draws. Those scenes that both the stage and the audience are surprised, laugh and recognize each other’s existence are everywhere in the show.
The venue will be the Invoice Theatre, the very first theatre constructed and dedicated for Blue Man Group. By havi
ng the Invoice Theatre, the art city Roppongi will add its cultural color more and more, and also will be a trendsetting place of entertainment in Asia.
