SONAR 2007

HAPPENINGText: Julio Cesar Palacio

The last day of the Sonar 2007 displayed the richness and diversity that give the festival its special touch. The night was long enough to review the eccentric madness of the unique and fantastic Devo, the universe of the rock band Mogwai from Glasgow, the queen of Spanish rap, Mala Rodríguez and the explicit lyrics from the Reggaeton ambassadors from Puerto Rico, Calle 13. A special cocktail of music like a rainbow inside the hughe Sonar Night Complex.

Devo

The big sensation of the day was the presence of Devo performing live after 17 years without playing at home. It was a luxury that no one wanted to miss out on. The audience’s first line was full of people that looked like the parents of the other people in the other stages on the Sonar Complex. All of them were wearing the iconic red conical hat.

Devo went out with yellow working outfit and with so much energy that it seemed that they have been recharging batteries all these 17 years. The crow was excited and the hits started right at the start with the mythical Wip it and Secret Agent man early in the show.

The Devo guys showed all the Post-punk, electronic psycho Delia surrounded by their freaky universe of crazy disco happiness. The veterans gave everything on stage, they all danced, jumped to the audience, played and even got undressed: They ended their show wearing nothing but a black type of old people’s underwear with nylon sox and very short pants.

Devo were a blast and truly a pleasure. But the night continued and the power and elegance of the Glasgow guys Mogwai was once again incredible. There were lots of people from the UK in the audience who seemed to be super proud of their band. Mogwai is one of these bands you should have seen live at least once. They drive you trough a new experience in experimental and maybe environmental rock. Never-ending guitar riffs and delicate piano melodies create a unique universe.

Meanwhile, the techno was gaining people. The Sonar Club stage got completely crowded with the American Techno Master Jeff Mills – Mills once again at the Sonar and once again a big success.

La Mala Rodríguez

Spain’s mixture of music influences were represented in the Show by La Mala Rodríguez. The Andalusian rap queens showed not only great lyrics but sophistication and charm. La Mala combines the social and intimate with a fine flamenco touch. Simply a great concert.

Right after La Mala was the moment to watch one of the surprises of this year’s line-up. The Puerto Rico reggaeton-band Calle 13. At this moment, you could see that is can be hard to be a Rooki. Because the bands who played before were all late, the show of the Puerto Rico group only lasted for 30 minutes. It was a little shocking to see the concert, because Calle 13 mixed social protest, funny speech and lyrics, but live they look like the ones they always criticize in their songs, the “Hip-hopers”. Calle 13’s was not only that of Latin “hip-hopers”, but they were almost borderline to the Gansta Rap style, pretty rude and aggressive.

The last Sonar Night ran out with another Sonar veteran that never fails to disappoint the crowed when the aim is to dance and have a good time. The French electro-techno Queen Miss Kittin djing for the people meant ecstasy till the end.

The 14th Barcelona International Festival of Advanced Music and Multimedia Art , Sonar, closed after three days of music experimentation, amazing shows day and night, the best revival moments in the past years, sound quality, fantastic atmosphere, and all the goodies that the people expect from the always young Veteran Sonar.

We already expect the best for the 15th Birthday next year !!!
