The Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain has played a central role in introducing the Japanese culture and art scene to European society. Japanese artists in diverse fields ranging from photography, architecture, design and painting have been part of the Fondation’s activities for over 30 years. The number of exhibitions by Japanese artists held by the Foundation to date is 14, including Issey Miyake’s “Making Things“.

The celebration of Cartier’s 50th anniversary in Japan is an opportunity to put into perspective the many stories that link the Maison to this country. Two parallel narratives will be presented in the Hyokeikan’s two symmetrical wings: the link between Cartier and Japan, and the intrinsic ties between the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and Japanese artists.

Exhibit artists include Sho Shibuya, Erina Matsui, Takashi Murakami, Tadanori Yokoo, Yoshinobu Araki, Rinko Kawauchi, Daido Moriyama, Tabaimo, Tatsuo Miyajima, Takeshi Kitano, Hiroshi Sugimoto, Yukio Nakagawa and Issey Miyake.
