KEIICHI TANAAMI: ADVENTURES IN MEMORY
The first major retrospective exhibition titled “Adventures in Memory” by the internationally acclaimed artist Keiichi Tanaami (b. 1936) will be held at The National Art Center, Tokyo from August 7th to November 11th, 2024.
Keiichi Tanaami has recently been enjoying a surge in positive critical reappraisal. From the 1960s until today, he has prolifically produced paintings, collages, sculptures, animations, experimental video pieces, and installations, applying methodologies and techniques he developed in the design field. Defying confinement to specific genres or conventional rules, he has had a significant impact in an art-historical context.
This exhibition is the first major retrospective covering Tanaami’s creative journey of more than 60 years, including the debut of his latest works, highlighting his status as a role model for contemporary artists. This unprecedented, comprehensive exploration of Tanaami’s oeuvre is organized around the theme of “memory.”
To commemorate the exhibition, Keiichi Tanaami and fashion doll BARBIE® will collaborate. During the exhibition, orders will be taken and sold at a special store. In addition, a limited number of “BARBIE® x TANAAMI” special set tickets, sold only in Japan ahead of the rest of the world, will be available from July 19th. The special set includes a special fan, not for sale, made by Ibasen, a long-established Edo fans maker, and a ticket to the exhibition as a special offer.
