The Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale began in 2000, has been struggling for a quarter of a century to open up new possibilities for the region by utilizing the skills that art has had since the beginning of time, such as the ability to live with nature, to discover places, and to connect people to places and people to people, to address the issues of aging populations, the outflow of young workers to cities, the decline of local power due to shrinking agriculture, and the collapse of communities. This summer will mark the ninth anniversary of the event.

This year’s Art Triennale will further deepen the ideas fostered by the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, including the development of artworks through the five senses, a full-length exhibition of Yukihisa Isobe, who has been a spiritual pillar of the festival, the launch of a project in Akiyamago, the deepest part of the festival, and a “movement of the earth” created together by local residents, foreign workers in Japan, refugees, persons with disabilities, artists, supporters and other people beyond region, generation, and genre.
