Multiplex Fiction, Ralo Mayer, DAS MUSTER DER SCHATTEN DES SPACEFRAME…, Secession, 2008

The central motifs in Ralo Mayer’s cross-media narrative structures are miniature universes and time machines. For his exhibition at the Secession’s Grafisches Kabinett, his chosen model is BIOSPHERE 2.

This closed ecosystem was built as a scientific test model for colonies in space between 1987 and 1991 in the desert of Arizona. Raly Mayer understands BIOSPHERE 2 as a link between the utopian ideals of the 1960 and ’70s and the global transformation taking place today.

His methods and works are shaped by a process-oriented mode of artistic knowledge production. Starting with large-scale, long-term research series, the resulting bodies of material, both complex and unwieldy, are then translated into a site-specific form.
