88 & FLAVORED LAYERS “X”

The symbol “x” can mean many different things to many different people. It can be a letterform, a destination, a crossroads or an answer. February 24th 2007, 88 and Flavored Layers brought the nation’s capital an event to honor the meaning of the symbol via an abundance of creativity through music, design, dance, fine art, and fashion.
The spirit and intention behind X was to cultivate, support and highlight DC’s creative community by bringing various aspects of it together in a LIVE-ART 21st century style happening.
Hosted at the new BeBar on 9th St, down by the Convention Center, the venue provided a relaxed, swank atmosphere for the collective. Via Live PA performances, we enjoyed the laidback chilled out beats provided by SHEN, and DC’s local favorites, Aligning Minds. Accompanying the music, we were mesmerized by the gothic gyrations of belly dancer, Mavi who silhouetted VJ Metaphreaq‘s projections for what seemed to be a total harmonious collaboration for all parties involved.
The highlight of the evening was the design competition, the three participating designers were Asha Ozbey, Heather Schmaedeke, and Omar Capers. They were given 4 hours to create a poster for ‘X’, using 3 words chosen by the night’s patrons as inspiration for their designs. The three words were Energy, Exuberance and Intensity.
