THE 9TH RES 10

HAPPENINGText: Christopher Lenz

For the ninth time RES presents its annual selection of 10 international creators to watch out for in 2006 and beyond. Anyone familiar with the RES Magazine will take their ‘advice’ dearly and check out these visual artists and witness their impact on the world of film, video, advertising and music. Their work is showcased in a special issue of the March/April RES Magazine & DVD. On April 22nd an appetizer of the selected work in the form of a short trailer was presented at The Mountain Bar in Chinatown.

DJs Nitedog and Lovefingers were spinning the decks, filling the room with soulful funky and housy vibes to celebrate the chosen talents and groove the night away.

Before coming to the chosen ones, let us briefly dwell on how RES started out. RES was founded in the mid-nineties in the basement of a San Francisco apartment. It started as the RESFEST film festival which was focussed on new digital tools that allowed filmmakers to explore new types of films. From the beginning on the festival was conceived as an event that toured different cities, and it now has gradually grown into a global tour, traveling to 35 cities.

The following illustrious mix constitutes the RES 10: Takagi Masakatsu, Martin De Thurah, Dougal Wilson, Fluorescent Hill, Eclectic Method, Impactist, Marina Zurkow, Ghislain Poirier, Nash Edgerton, Keita Takahashi.

Takagi Masakatsu “Bloomy Girls”

The works of these creators, which are also featured on the special issue of the March/ April RES DVD, range from the stunningly gorgeous and dreamily playful animations of Japanese artist/musician Takagi Masakatsu, the surreal dark, postmodern and at the same time medieval world of Danish director Martin de Thurah, to the full-on live-action driven short of Australian filmmaker Nash Edgerton. A true global selection of outstanding talent.

I like to think that just having been granted access to watch these talented creators is a very fortunate position. Thanks to RES, we got chosen to enjoy the works of the chosen ones.
