NISEKO SUMMER FEST 2012

HAPPENINGText: Satsuki Miyanishi

From June 22nd to 24th for three days the ‘Niseko Summer Fest 2012‘, an event for enjoying Hokkaido’s food, wine, art and music, was held at the Hilton Niseko Village. For this memorable first event, a Sapporo based artist Chisato Shinya was selected to show her work and Clark Gallery + SHIFT became in charge of the art direction and the organization of the venue.

In recent years, Niseko has been visited by many tourists throughout the year as one of the best ski resorts in the world and has been developing uniquely as a cultural city. The event was held to make Niseko renowned as a summer resort as well as a winter resort.

On the 22nd a reception was held at a specially prepared art gallery in order to enjoy wine and pasta cooked from Hokkaido ingredients while enjoying art along with high quality music. Taketo Yanagihara, a Sapporo based DJ & the producer of ‘SenSe‘ was invited as the DJ and produced a sophisticated atmosphere with music.

For the main event on 23rd, Jerome DeKoninck from Tokyo Hilton’s ‘Le Pergolèse‘, Yuichi Kamimura of ‘Kamimura‘, an one star Michelin restaurant in Niseko and Rob Shipman, an executive chef from Hilton Niseko Village collaborated to produce a special course meal using seasonal ingredients along with a wine selected by a wine sommelier, Miyuki Katsuyama. On top of that, artworks by Chisato Shinya and live music helped to create an enjoyable atmosphere.

Chisato Shinya’s original mini-cushions were hung on an installed tree and were given as a present to the visitors. What started off as a quite formal and tense occasion gradually transformed into a Niseko-like warm atmosphere as the time went on. Visitors were enjoying the event by taking photos in front of the tree and choosing their preferred presents. Visitors were also given black tea as a gift from ‘Lupicia‘, a restaurant in Niseko.

During this 3 day event an art gallery was specially installed within the Hilton Niseko Village. New artworks by Chisato Shinya were premiered and work by artists based in Niseko was also exhibited. A workshop was also organized to allow visitors to experience creating their own original T-shirts designs using a stencil template.

A visitor was able to experience the workshop for free by bringing his or her own t-shirt. A tote bag was also available with a charge. Many visitors from children to adults were able to join the workshop. It was a pity that a cooking demonstration and a lunch were cancelled on the 24th but it was an extensive 3 days. We would like to thank everyone for the opportunity to be able to enjoy thoroughly the food, wine, art and music in this location, Niseko.
