The hotel “Sapporo Grand Hotel” opened a new art gallery “Granvista Gallery Sapporo” in July 2013. The third exhibition ‘From “Thing” to “Relationship”‘ by Shigeru Uchida who is a representative interior designer in Japan. He have worked on from residential and commercial space, to furniture, industrial design, architecture, and regional development both nationally and internationally.

Originally the “thelf” is the thing we decorate something beyond its function of storing. People worried about what kind of books should they put on the double small shelf in a Shoin (drawing room) at Togudo in Jisho-ji (Ginkaku-ji) Temple. These are shelves to show people. Although these shelves became a interior element of a Shoin (drawing room) at Togudo beyond its function of a shelf.

Since then, a variety of shelf is designed in the Edo period. Model of shelf as typified by “forty-eight shelf” is produced. Designed shelf variety such as birds shelf, Torii shelf, willow shelf, cherry shelf, plum shelf, trellis, dragon protect shelf, and fan shelf enrich the interior. This exhibition shows these kind of things designed as interior elements. (Shigeru Uchida)
