OPTIMO

PEOPLEText: Nicolas Roope

The Swiss have a reputation for being boring. Is this true? If not tell us something interesting which is happening in Switzerland right now (apart from Optimo of course.)

Yes, I guess it’s true. Snowboarding is about the most interesting thing I can think of and there’s a lot of that.

Swiss typography has worldwide reputation. Do you think it deserves this status?

I don’t think it does. The reputation is based on some good work that took place a long time ago. Everyone in Switzerland is still influenced by the modernist approach that is still considered correct. The reputation tends to make typographers very boring as they’re under the illusion that Swiss design is still GREAT, which it’s not.

What designer(s)/web design(s) do you like?

Antirom who I am currently working with (he had to say that) and Cornel Windlin who I’m just about to start working for. He designed Moonbase Alpha which you might know.

Do you have any interest in Japanese pop culture?

The Japanese people seem obsessed to me; in a good way I think. Even though on the surface Japanese people seem very reserved and straight, you often find that they’re into some crazy stuff, Patchinko or weird pornography or something. The culture seems to allow people to live out their obsessions in a way that’s not possible here. Pop culture in Japan seems to be another expression of this obsession.

I would love to work there one day.

And the future?

Help the site to grow. Apart from that we’ll see what happens.
