Re-opened last October and newly renovated by Los Angeles architect Frederick Fisher, P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center has recently been providing more reason to head out to it’s Long Island City location in Queens.

Just a quick subway ride from Manhattan, P.S.1 has been holding Warm Up Saturdays with some high profiles DJ’s like DJ Cam and Dimitri spinning beats in the main outdoor space as you walk in. The new renovation has large concrete walls enclosing an outdoor courtyard and over 4 floors of high ceiling installation art spaces.

The outdoor courtyard was littered with odd art installations like a tent filled with spraying water (which attendees willingly ran into to get wet) to a tower over 3 stories tall made with old desks and filing cabinets with a bar at its base run by a bikini clad bartender. Inside, I was more captivated by views of Manhattan through the windows than the art since I was drawn to the cool breeze from the outside as the spaces are not air conditioned.

However, one installation not to be missed is James Turrell’s on the top most floor which frames the sky through a window in a surreal way; it feels like you’ll fall right into the sky. The crowd was young and arty, and gathered on the grand entrance steps to eat some of the cheap barbecued food and watch people as they came into P.S.1.
