TOMOKAZU MATSUYAMA: FIRST LAST
New York-based global artist Tomokazu Matsuyama‘s first large-scale solo exhibition in Tokyo, “Tomokazu Matsuyama: FIRST LAST,” will be held at Azabudai Hills Gallery, a new art spot in Tokyo from March 8th to May 11th, 2025.
Matsuyama has been active in New York, the home of contemporary art, for a quarter of a century, and is now one of the world’s most popular artists of the next generation. The exhibition will feature about 40 works, including his representative works and 15 of his latest works, which have been exhibited in Shanghai, Venice, London, and other cities, and have only been shown in Japan.
In addition, Matsuyama will present a new series of paintings, “First Last” (the latter will be first and the former will be last), which also serves as the title of the exhibition. In this series, Matsuyama takes as its starting point the various problems facing American society, and through the unique perspective brought about by his own idiosyncratic identity, reinterprets the reality of contemporary global society, creating a new empathy for the body through powerful colors and grand-scale paintings.
