The exhibition elucidates the early development from images to light-based works using around thirty selected icons and covers the spectrum from crucial individual works comprising fluorescent tubes to the later serial and larger scale room-filling works. The mumok show will make visible the artistic diversity and the developmental possibilities inherent in commercially available neon tubes which Flavin knew how to exploit with such impressive consistency. These run from the first “golden” tubes placed diagonally on the wall, continue with the “monuments” for V. Tatlin and on to the room installations such as an artificial barrier of blue, red and blue fluorescent light (to Flavin Starbuck Judd), 1968.
