Housed in a Victorian/Georgian styled building in Cape Town, South Africa, Salon91 looks to make contemporary fine art more accessible to the public. Besides being an art gallery in developing and showcasing young local talent, Salon91 is also an art consultation service, and place for potential art buyers to gather.
The gallery is a small intimate space, situated on a corner on Cape Town’s trendy Kloof Street. The interior is designed to keep with the classic architecture of the building exterior, with a hint of the original Parisian Salon style of the 17th Century.
The concept of Salon91 was founded by owner and manager, Monique Du Preez. Every 3 to 4 weeks, the gallery has a new theme or exhibition. Preparations for Salon91’s themes are planned from the end of the previous year, to the beginning of the new year. During that time, the artists are selected and invited for either a solo or collective exhibition, depending on the theme. “When artists are selected to participate in a group exhibition of a particular theme, we look firstly at the suitability of each artist and their respective creative languages in relation to the subject matter. Comparisons and Links in terms of Medium, Palette, Style, Format, Scale, etc, between the various artists will then be studied and explored”, says Monique.
So for all you up and coming artists out there wanting to get their work exhibited and noticed, Salon91 invites all artists to contact Monique at email@example.com. Successful applicants will be kept listed on their books for future consultations, or be invited to participate in one of their exciting exhibitions or the year.
The studio is also open from Tuesdays to Fridays (10am-6pm) in the week, and on Saturday (10am-2pm), where the public can also come in and see the art gallery’s latest artworks that local talent has to offer. It’s definitely a stop for art lovers visiting Cape Town.
