Whitestone Gallery, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary, opened its fourth space in Taipei on 8th April of this year. The gallery is designed by the world-renowned architect Kengo Kuma.

Whitestone Gallery opened the Karuizawa New Art Museum in Karuizawa (a popular mountain plateau resort town) in 2012. To develop their aim of introducing talented Japanese artists overseas they opened another gallery in Hong Kong in 2015. Now, Taipei gallery allows them to approach the wider Asian market.

Kengo Kuma, who designed the space in Taipei, also designed the National Stadium for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The gallery features Kuma’s signature style of merging cypress wood into the structure of a building. The space Inside the gallery is true to his minimalistic white cube style. Seven meter high ceilings enable this gallery to host groundbreaking exhibitions and installations.

The first exhibition held there features over 200 artworks from 60 artists including the most influential Japanese avant-grade art associate GUTAI (1954-1972), Yoshitomo Nara, Yayoi Kusama, Lee Ufan, and young aspiring artists from Japan.

In addition, Whitestone Gallery also cooperates with the French conceptual artist Daniel Buren, Chinese young artists Yang Yongliang and Huang Yuxing, and more. Whitestone Gallery Taipei will continue our tradition of exhibiting historically significant art movements and art works while also exploring innovative international contemporary artists.
