CHANEL PRESENTS “LA GALERIE DU 19M TOKYO”

HAPPENINGText: Sébastien Raineri

Embroidery has long been woven into the fabric of French cultural identity, adorning royal garments, interiors, and historical monuments. Lesage stands at the forefront of this lineage, safeguarding ancient techniques while continually expanding the boundaries of their application. Its influence extends beyond couture, shaping interior design, stage costumes, and restoration projects that preserve the beauty of France’s artistic patrimony.

To mark its centenary, Lesage presents Murmuration, a collaborative work with artist Aristide (Barraud), a monumental embroidered drawing that captures the poetic choreography of starlings in flight. The project, stretching from Paris to Marseille, Venice to Dakar, becomes a moving metaphor for the collective spirit of craftsmanship. Each embroidered bird represents the coordination, precision, and grace that define both the artisan’s hand and the artist’s vision.

La Galerie du 19M Tokyo unfolds as both a celebration and a dialogue, between heritage and innovation, Japan and France, artisans and artists. Through the poetic landscape of “Beyond Our Horizons” and the centennial tribute “Lesage. 100 Years of Fashion and Decoration”, the exhibition reveals the profound continuity that links the crafts of yesterday to the creativity of today.

In these two complementary chapters, visitors are invited to witness how the hand, guided by tradition, still possesses the power to shape the future. Whether through the sukiya-inspired architecture of the creative village or the shimmering embroideries of Lesage’s atelier, every gesture embodies a shared language of beauty, precision, and imagination. Suspended high above Tokyo, la Galerie du 19M becomes a living bridge between cultures and generations, a testament to the enduring vitality of craftsmanship in a world increasingly defined by change.
