PEOPLEText: Yurie Hatano

SHIFT 2007 Calendar has been released, and also DOTMOV 2006 has finally started. In the both competitions which gathered a number of submissions from all over the world, we found a young creator who won with total of 4 works and received high evaluations from DOTMOV judges; Jacky Lochinghang from Hong Kong. This month’s SHIFT cover is designed by Jacky, and is related to his winning work. He is one of the notable creators, who brings various unique views by adding clever distortion on some original, simple and everyday objects.

Could you tell us about yourself?

My name is Jacky Loch (Loch is short form of my Chinese name), I was born in Hong Kong in 80s. Started my career last year and forgot all the things I learnt from school.

What do you recently spend most of your working time for?

I am working as a motion graphic designer in Carbon. We are mainly focusing on broadcast/TV channel graphic design. Of course, we will do all visual related work.

What made you to enter the SHIFT 2007 CALENDAR competition?

Bryan Fu who won the same competition last year. He is my best friend and colleague.

Could you describe about your selected work for SHIFT 2007 CALENDAR?

The work is called “anatomy of your habit”. Our body/life style/habits is dominated by digital device. Please try to be more “analog”.

Could you also describe about your 3 selected films for DOTMOV 2006?

The selected videos are part of my final year project last year. The theme is “insight/outsight”. The project is trying to explore the interaction between our everyday life perceptions and the awareness of our surrounding/environment.

ON/OFF
This Video is based on the idea from the movie “Waking Life” by Richard Linklater. It explores our reality and the auidence’s position inside moving image media.

TAICHI
With the movement of Taichi, this video tries to examine the relation between foreground, background, framing, cropping and our choice of seeing.

2D SLAVE
We all are 3 dimensional organisms. In our world, we seem have a power to control all things in lower dimensional level (1d, 2d and 3d). However, we cannot understand what is 4-dimension just like a 2d organism can’t recognize what is 3D. So, Slave or master?

How do you find “somethings strange and new”?

Actually, nothing is new in this world. I will try to pay extra attention in my body and the surrounding. Try to keep focus on some original, simple and everyday object. Think deeply about their function, usage, history…etc and you will find out how strange we are.

Do you have any artists, things or happenings you are influenced by?

Novel by Murakami Haruki, Camus, Yukio Mishima… etc. Those novels give me a sense of romantic, lonely but irrational.
Most of the chinese painting and the comic by Maruo Suehiro. I like to see somethings happen in one scene, in distorted time and space.

Could you tell us about the concept of the SHIFT cover this month?

Switch on or off magnify our power of choosing.

What is your next plan?

I hope I can finish my first short animation within 2006 and avoid being commercial.

Please leave a message to readers.

Take a break! And enjoy the break!
