ECHIGO-TSUMARI ART TRIENNIAL 2009
The next day, I visited to Matsudai Area. Looking at kids running in front of The Rice Field, a work by Ilya&Emllia Kabakov, I took a walk up on the rice terrace. In this area, you can enjoy art works in the rustic scenery.
The Shigeyo Kobayashi’s work “They came down as if they were photosynthesizing time. -Three vulnerable kinds of Red Data plants.” represents threatened plants in Niigata, created with white tiles. The white plants appeared to be flashing as if they were letting people know of their presence.
In contrast to Shigeyo’s work, Masayuki Hashimoto’s “Under a Cedar in Snow Country” blends into the surrounding environment. The darken sculptural piece made of copper looks like snuggling against a tree or vise a versa. I felt a natural power from the moss-covered work caption.
Going up on the steep hill, I found 6 freezers displayed in the resting place, “Carpe Diem” a work by Simon Beer. A smiling snowman is put in the freezer. It’s a fun irony for sweaty visitors who just came up in the heat hot weather. A group of kids enjoyed the cold snowman a lot. After the event, the snowman will be returned to the earth.
The “Obervatory” by Tatsuji Ushijima can be viewed over the rice filed. Tubes that are stretched out to the sky and earth are set to the just height of ears and you can listen to the sounds of nature all at once.
Charles Billard installed Sace Slitar Orchestra. He created a stringed instrument which visitors can enjoy playing with and listening the sound echos in the woods.
