TOKYO DESIGNERS BLOCK 2002

HAPPENINGText: Sachiko Kurashina

The works of Claudio Colluci were at the display window in Hermes, Shibuya-Seibu department store. He has been working mainly in Tokyo and Paris since he moved to Japan and is engaged in window display designs for Hermes. That might be a reason but I feel strongly an impression that his shelves suited the products of Hermes well.

Claudio Colluci “CXC”

The shelf is called “CXC”. It is made of a compact laminate and the shapes or the length of the shelf can be flexibly changed to meet various purposes. The key colour of Hermes, orange, and light yellow and pink harmonised each other, and black used in hems worked well to make other colours look brighter. Also, curved elements reminded me of a feminine touch and I think a forest-like-background nicely matched the atmosphere of the shelf.

“Zero Gate” is a fashion building near Shibuya-Seibu department store and a massive installation could be found on the whole windows of this building.

Shinichiro Arakawa

Shinichiro Arakawa took a gallery style to present his fashion as an art. Looking at mannequins was like looking at a usual display windows, but I felt I understood the meaning of this installation when I looked it from the outside.

Namaiki

It was Namaiki who hijacked the windows of Zero Gate with tear-off-paper-picture and the world of insects was lively expressed there. The touch of tearing off made more movements of the insects rather than sharp lines that can be made by machines. The impact of this work was quite strong when I looked up it from the outside. It was nearly noon when I saw this work so that I imaged how these work looks like at night. Could I hear the singing of insects?

Furniture Design Agra “Pzeel”

The pieces of Furniture Design Agra were displayed at Paul Smith WOMEN Daikanyama. Furniture Design Agra is a furniture studio based in Sapporo. The chair “Pzeel” is made of a recyclable non-bridge-building expanded polystyrene. Three different sized chairs looked like a chair family. Speaking of Paul Smith, I always remember that colour-barcode-like shopping bag. And was it only me who find the common points between the colourful tastes, which Paul Smith loves, and the colours of Pzeel? An appearance of these chairs was as if they were there for a long time and I thought that keeping a good harmony with surroundings or not might be a secret of works that is loved by many people.
