SEEMEN “VIOLENT MACHINES PERFORM ACTS OF LOVE”

HAPPENINGText: Mariko Takei

Violent Machines Perform Acts of Love have performed by San Francisco artist group called SEEMEN for 6 days at an gallery THE LAB. The performance was all about to provide interaction between audience members and violent and humorous machines and robots created by SEEMEN.

There were 13 unique machines/robots – ranged from pointless one to humorous one – which were guided from one to the other by Kal Spelletich, a member of the group.

Some interesting works among them were violent machines; the SUICIDE CHAIR – a chair that you sit on it and die(?!) and the KUNG-FU ARM – a metal stick (an arm) crushes stuff like bricks, cabbages, cans of beer, etc. Another one which I liked was the PIT BULL FIGHTS – 3 skeltal bull robots fight each other until they all die.

Filled with various sounds of the people cheering and booing, smashing of glass, clashing of machines, and etc., the gallery space seemed to be turned out a circus where Space Cow Girls from the fashion show at the ArtCar WestFest also took part in. It might be hard to imagine what this performance is all about unless you experience it, but check out some works by SEEMEN on THE LAB site.

You could also guess how SEEMEN is like through the notes printed on the flyer… “Neither SEEMEN or THE LAB nor any of its members shall be held responsible or liable for any loss, damage, or injury from any activity organized, sponsored or promoted by SEEMEN or the presenting organization.”
