In April 2013, the new Deutsche Bank KunstHalle opened in Berlin. This new museum is taking on the role previously carried out by the former German Guggenheim, which was established by2013年4月にベルリンに新しい美術館「ドイツ銀行クンストハーレ」がオープンした。この新しい美術館はベルリンにあったドイツグッゲンハイム美術館の役割を引き継ぐもの。ドイツグッゲンハイム美術館はドイツ銀行が母体となりソロモン・R・グッゲンハイム財団と共に設立された。しかし15年を越える共同作業は2013年に終わりを迎え、ドイツ銀行が単独で運営を行うドイツ銀行クンストハーレへと生まれ変わっている。
ドイツ銀行クンストハーレは今までと変ることなくベルリン中心部に建物を構える。ただし場所は変らなくとも、そのプログラムは大きく変っている。ドイツグッゲンハイム美術館時代に行われたのはドイツを代表する画家ゲルハルト・リヒター、現代彫刻の奇才アーニッシュ・カプーアといった世界的な巨匠の展示。そこでは美術界の中心であるヨーロッパやアメリカのアーティストが中心だった。しかし、これからは美術の世界で注目を浴びにくい周縁の国々、アジア、アフリカ、南米のアーティストに焦点を当てていくという。
こうした新たな取り組みと共にドイツグッゲンハイム美術館から継続されるのは、「アーティスト・オブ・ザ・イヤー」と呼ばれる若手アーティストを支援する賞の授与。2010年から始まりワンゲチ・ムトゥ、イト・バラダ、そしてローマン・オンダックといった世界的な名声を誇る若手アーティストに賞を与えてきている。また受賞者の個展を開催することになっているため、ドイツ銀行クンストハーレは成長著しい若手アーティストを紹介する場ともなっている。
美術界における周縁国や若手アーティストの展覧会のように、ドイツ銀行クンストハーレが目指すものは紹介されにくいアート作品の紹介。ベルリンという様々な価値観を映し出す街の中で、この新しい美術館は新しい価値観を気付かせる美術館として強烈な存在感を見せるに違いない。

Text: Kiyohide Hayashi Deutsche Bank and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. The 15-year partnership between the two institutions ended in 2013, and the museum was reborn as the KunstHalle, operated solely by Deutsche Bank.
The Deutsche Bank KunstHalle will be housed in the former museum’s building in Central Berlin. Although the building will remain the same, the new museum’s program will completely change. The German Guggenheim held exhibitions with prominent artists like the famous German artist Gerhard Richter and the contemporary sculptor Anish Kapoor. It showcased the center of the western art world, or artists from Europe and the US. However, the new KunstHalle will focus on artists from countries in Asia, Africa, and South America who usually don’t get attention from the art world.
While it will undertake a new program, KunstHalle will continue the Artist of the Year award, which was given to young artists by the German Guggenheim. The award started in 2010, and has been given to well-known artists, Wangechi Mutu, Ito Barada, and Roman Ondák. Since the award also promises a solo exhibition at the museum, the KunstHalle will undoubtedly be introducing up-and-coming young artists.
The KunstHalle aims to present artworks that receive less attention, such as those by young artists and artists from countries in the peripheries of the art world. In a city like Berlin with various values, this museum will most likely hold a significant presence as a space that highlights new values and perspectives.
