When Francis Ford Coppola visited Argentina in 2008 to shoot his film Tetro, he fell in love with the city of Buenos Aires. That is how he decided to buy a property in the neighbourhood of Palermo Sohoフランシス・フォード・コッポラは、映画テトロの撮影で2008年にアルゼンチンを訪れた際にブエノスアイレスの虜となり、パレルモ・ソーホーに自宅用の物件を手に入れると、さらにはその自宅をホテルにしてしまった。
コッポラが選んだのは、敷地が600m2程のクラシックな造りの家屋で、ゲストルームを13室備えている。室内装飾はコッポラの妻であるエリーが手掛けており、植物や家具に加え、カーペット、アルゼンチン北部で編まれたタペストリーや織物、牛革のラグマット、動物の頭部を模した彩色された壁掛けに至るまで、ありとあらゆる現地の物をエリーが自ら選んだ。
７つの部屋にはコッポラ一族の名前がそれぞれつけられている。フランシス、ソフィア、そして親族達の名前だ。部屋の内装は全て異なるものの、そこには共通したスタイルがある。広々としており、純毛のキルトがあしらわれた各部屋には古き良きポルテーニョの雰囲気が漂っている。さらには屋外スペースもある。植物に覆われ、中心部にプールがすえられた大きな庭の周囲を、午後の日差しを楽しむための椅子やラウンジチェアが並ぶテラスがとり囲んでいる。
パレルモのような熱を帯びた地域の中に、静けさとくつろぎを見出したいのであれば、ハルディン・エスコンディード以上の選択肢はないだろう。このホテルには大切なパートナーや家族と一緒に滞在するのが理想的だ。ホテル全体を貸し切ることもできる。コッポラがブエノスアイレスの自宅の空気感をどのようにして形づくったのか、それを解き明かすためのホテル滞在は、間違いなく興味深いものになるだろう。

The chosen house is classic in its style, has almost 600m2 and has rooms for 13 guests. The interior decoration has been in the hands of the filmmaker’s wife, Ellie, who has chosen all sorts of autochthonous elements including plants, furniture and objects such as carpets, tapestries and woven fabrics from the north of Argentina, cowhides working as carpets, painted animal heads hanging from the walls.
The seven rooms are named after the members of the family – Francis, Sofía and other less-known relatives – each one is different, but they share the same style: they are roomy, with pure wool quilts and an old-fashioned Porteño atmosphere. In addition, there are several outdoor spaces: a broad garden, covered in plants and with a central swimming pool, surrounded by terraces with chairs and loungers to enjoy the sunny afternoons.
Jardín Escondido is the perfect choice if you wish to find calmness and an intimate spirit within a neighbourhood as hectic as Palermo. It is ideal to stay with a partner or with your family – it is possible to hire the entire house. It is doubtless very interesting to visit the hotel in order to discover how the director has decided to give some atmosphere to his residence in Buenos Aires.
