Curated by surface design studio, Pattern People, BENEATH THE SURFACE Exhibition will take place at NEMO HQ under the theme of Flora, Fantasy & Fable in Surface Design. It highlights the work of influential, contemporary surface designers through the mediums of wallpaper, prints, and 3-dimensional objects. The work presented demonstrates how patterns can give dimension to an otherwise flat surface and create a world that pulls in the viewer. Focusing on escapist and fantastical themes, the exhibit features utopian landscapes, folkloric fables, and interpretations of magical inner journeys.

Mörel Books released a new book, Some British Birds, of an indie musician legend Edwyn Collins who illustrated these spellbinding birds on a daily basis after suffering two cerebral hemorrhages in 2005. The delicacy of the birds demonstrate Edwyn’s skill as an illustrator while under the constrains of using his left hand, having lost control of his right after the strokes. Not only do the illustrations chart his unrelenting endeavor to recover, but the birds ability to defy gravity seem to echo Edwyn’s ability to defy even the most deliberating fate!

Circleculture Gallery presents a group exhibition of works by Barry McGee, Ed Templeton and Raymond Pettibon. This exhibition serves to focus on the recent artistic output by three underground heroes from the worlds of skateboarding, graffiti and punk. Even though each of these artists has now firmly established themselves in the world of contemporary art, there are still common themes between them that hail back to their subcultural roots. It could be described primarily as an overriding sense of concern for and representation of the downtrodden, the outsider, the anti-hero. Curated by Aaron Rose, the exhibition goes until May 30th.
