While it ranks 5th in population of 1.9 million in the nation, Sapporo is a compact town where most of major facilities are located in the city center in Chuo-ku. Having heavy snowfall in the winter, the underground arcade and subways are quite developed. A new underground arcade connecting Sapporo Station and Susukino Station is now under construction. The new arcade and directly-connected commercial buildings will be the center of the city.
