Even though you might not have a particular reason, you can’t leave the area without stopping by this store. You know the type of store that people refer to as their favorite shop? Merci is probably a good example特に用事はなくても、近くまで来たら必ず寄ってしまうお店。そんなお店を「お気に入りのお店」とひとは呼ぶ。多くの人にとって、「メルシー」はまさにその代表ではないだろうか。この店に訪れると、いつだって新たな発見がある。また、心地よい雰囲気も伴って、時間を忘れてついつい長居してしまう。
その謎を知りたく、閉店後のカフェスペースにて、オーナーのジャンリュック・コロナ氏とのインタビューを行なった。そして、このひとときの後、ますますメルシーの、そしてジャン氏の虜になってしまった次第である。
「人生よありがとう！(Merci la vie!)」という言葉から始まったという「メルシー」。子供服ブランド「ボンポワン」を営んでいた夫妻が、成功したことをきっかけに、この感謝の気持ちをお店というかたちで実現。そして売り上げの一部を、マダガスカル島の人々に寄付をしている。
フロアはファッション60％、住まい40％、プラス２つのカフェと１つのレストランで構成されている。入口近くの吹き抜けのスペースでは、３週間ごとに全く新しくなる展示会スペースが、我々を迎える。天井からは、そのテーマに合ったものがダイナミックに吊るされ、見る人の心を沸き立ててくれる。「いつも同じ店なんてつまらない！」とジャン氏がおっしゃるように、このコーナーは３週間で、全て変わってしまうから、何回か訪れたことのある人でも、もしかしたら同じ「メルシー」には見えないかもしれない。お店側が、自らの好奇心のアンテナに誠実に、そして、作り手の背景がちゃんと見えるようにと、本当に凝った内容で作られている。ここで提案される「新しいスタイル」のあり方は毎回が必見。
ファッション、インテリア、生活雑貨、文房具と世界中のプロダクトを扱い、そのどれもが誠実でユーモアのあるもの。現地に赴いて出会ったという品々のなかから、心ゆくまで使うことのできるものに出会えることだろう。人とモノの距離がとても近いから手に取って確かめやすいのも嬉しい。
また、食事スペースはバラエティに富んでいる。棚にある古本を読み、買うことができる「ユーズドブック・カフェ」、店内には映画が流れる「シネ・カフェ」、地下スペースでありながらも窓の外には植物が広がり、日光が優しく降り注ぐ レストラン「カンティン(イタリア語で”食堂”の意味)」と３つの食事のスペースは、その日の気分や用途によって使い分けることができる。
まだ行ったことのない人にも、これからも通い続ける人にも、「メルシー」はいつだって、好奇心を刺激してくれるに違いない。なぜなら、このお店の好奇心のアンテナは、世界のあらゆる点に張り巡らされており、人々の生活を、少し違った方向から優しくプッシュしてくれるのだから。

Text and photo: Shotaro Okada of that type of store to lots of people. When people visit this store, they always discover something new. With the comfortable atmosphere at the store, one might lose track of time and stay there for a long time.
In order to find out the secrets of the shop, I arranged an interview with the owner, Monsieur Jean-Luc Colonna, at the café after the shop was closed. After the interview, I even became more attracted to Merci and Monsieur Jean.
Merci started with the phrase “thank you, life! ‘merci la vie!’.” A couple who owned the children’s fashion brand ‘Bonpoint’ started Merci to show their appreciation for the brand’s success. Donations are made from a part of every sale to the people of Madagascar.
Sixty percent of the store’s floor space is dedicated to fashion related merchandise and forty percent goes to household merchandise. The store also houses two cafes and one restaurant. At the atrium near the entrance, a new exhibit always welcomes customers. The store sets up different themes with each exhibit and hangs artwork from the ceiling according to the theme. These hung pieces always look dynamic and excite customers. Monsieur Jean says, “Having the store look the same all of the time is boring!” Therefore, he decided to have new exhibit every three weeks. Even people who have been to Merci many times might get confused with its new look. These exhibits are always very detailed and well made since the store tries to pursue the goal of showing artists’ backgrounds and curiosity. Their ‘suggested new style’ is always a must-see.
Merci carries unique and sturdy clothes, designer furniture, household goods and stationary from all over the world. Customers should be able to find things that they can thoroughly enjoy among the items picked directly from various countries. It’s always a good thing for customers that they can hold and touch merchandise.
Their dining space is quite varied, including three unique areas: The ‘Used Book Café’ where people can read or choose to purchase any of the used books on the shelves; The ‘Ciné Café’ where movies are continuously playing; and ‘Cantine’ (which means ‘restaurant’ in Italian) where people case see plants growing outside of the window and bask in the nice sunshine which floods the room, even though the restaurant is located in the basement. Customers can choose their spot for the day depending on their mood or usage.
Merci seems to stimulate the curiosity of the regulars and even people who have never been there. Merci’s antenna of curiosity broadcasts all over the world and kindly provides good suggestions to people’s lives from a unique perspective.
