Jean-Luc and Takako Richard opened their first art gallery in September 1989 in the Parisian area of the Bastille. Named Gallery Oz, the place promoted new digital art and solidly established its reputation byジーン・リュックとタカコ・リチャードは最初のアートギャラリーを1989年9月にパリのバスティーユにオープンした。

bringing for the first time in Paris, from New York, Barocco artists like Arch Connelly, Christopher Tanner, Rhonda Zwillinger, Thomas Lanigan-Schmidt or Pepon Osario. The gallery also represented other international creators (Choi Jeong Hwa, Robert Groborne, Robert Kushner, Milan Kunc, Rainer Gross, Attila Richard Lukacs, Joost van den Toorn, Christophe Avella-Bagur or Laszlo Féher) and regularly exhibited photographers, such as Erwin Olaf, Bae Bien-U or Jacqueline Hassink.

In October 2002, the gallery moved to another area of the city, on Saint-Louis Island, changing its name to Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard. The focus then shifted towards “new painting” and the gallery from then on mostly organized solo shows (Risa Sato, Kiyoshi Nakagami, Yek, Paul Henry Ramirez, Carl Fudge, Adam Ross, Olaf Rauh, Hervé Heuzé, Beverly Fishman, Alice Stepanek & Steven Maslin, Scott Anderson, Yuichi Higashionna, Christoph Wedding, Shirley Kaneda, Tim Bavington…).

In January 2006, the Jean-Luc & Takako Richard gallery finally moved to its current location in the area of Le Marais, well known by Parisian contemporary art lovers. In 2007, the gallery doubled its space, now offering a quite unique 400 square meter exhibition surface. In fact, when entering the place, one almost feels like being in one of New York’s huge art spaces, settled in former industrial buildings. So this is not a surprise to learn that Jean-Luc and Takako Richard have been running a second gallery, in New York’s Chelsea, since September 2011. The name of the gallery has been officially changed on the occasion, simply becoming Galerie Richard.

The lenghty rooms of the Parisian Galerie Richard allow for the display of installations and of exceptionally large works. For instance, in 2012, famous Japanese artist Takesada Matsutani presented a large scale work on paper that he rarely has the chance to present otherwise. Jean-Luc and Takako Richard also take full advantage of the large volumes of their gallery, by regularly presenting double personal exhibitions. The program is always of great quality, with a fine balance between established international artists and talented emerging creators. Various media are represented in the selection, but a strong focus is put on contemporary art and particularly on what the gallery defines as the “rebirth of painting”.

Anyway, the excellent choice of artists more than anything reflects the passion of Jean-Luc and Takako Richard, and their fine perception and knowledge of modern and contemporary art. The Franco-Japanese gallerists really don’t seem to have other ambition than supporting artists they admire, whatever the nationality, age or favourite media of the creator. As for the selection, the price range of the works is very large. The gallery not only sells unique pieces but also an interesting selection of prints, ceramics or multiples, more affordable for limited budgets, and also regularly publishes interesting monographs of the exhibiting artists. The Richard gallery also regularly participates in important international art fairs, in Europe (Art, Art Amsterdam, Art Rotterdam, Art Cologne, Art Frankfurt…) as well as in the United States (Art Miami and Pulse Miami, Pulse New York, Art Chicago…).
