From the early twentieth century until 1996 near the Metro station of Legazpi there was a large slaughterhouse, however, in recent decades parts of this huge tract of land have been converted for other uses such as the headquarters of20世紀初頭から1996年まで、メトロのレガスピ駅の近くに大きな畜殺場があった。

the Ballet Nacional de España and the Compañía Nacional de Danza. Since 2003 the majority of the site has been designated for socio-cultural use and thus the Matadero Madrid has become synonymous with the famous cultural scene of Madrid. Nationally and internationally it is focused on artistic creation, which includes but isn’t limited to performing arts, visual arts, music, dance, architecture, fashion, literature, and cinema, and with its aims in mind it has a large amount of space in order to do this. Furthermore, in order to achieve its goals in international collaboration it has forged links with centres such as the Lieu Unique in Nantes, the Mattatoio in Rome and the Delfina Foundation in London. It is also associated with other artistic institutions, for example, the Casa del Lector, in warehouses 13 and 14, is sponsored by the Fundación Germán Sánchez-Rupérez in Salamanca.

The Casa del Lector is dedicated to reading, for children and adults, in order to interpret the world and society. It achieves this through exhibitions, courses, workshops, music, and film. The Design Centre is located in warehouse 17 and since 2007 it has worked to promote design through projects in graphic, industrial and interior design. The Cineteca is almost exclusively dedicated to non-fiction films, it is also includes a multi-purpose hall (Sala B), the Documenta Archive, the Plató and the Cantina, which allows visitors to see screenings in different formats and styles, as well as eat and drink. The Intermediæ is a space for reflecting upon and questioning modern creativity through the development of projects open to all visitors. This unique concept creates a platform where artists and audiences can discuss and discover the answers to the current and future cultural context of society. In another part of the Matadero Madrid there is the Nave de Música, a space comprising of a radio studio, a recording studio, a small stage for concerts, as well as other rooms including rehearsal rooms. One aspect of this is that artists and musicians can come together for interdisciplinary experiments in sound. In warehouses 10, 11 and 12, is the Naves del Español, which is basically the centre point for research in performing arts at this remarkable venue.

As the Matadero is open every day until late it is a perfect place for walking around in the daytime and in the evening, there is a lot to see and the whole venue is presented very tastefully. In addition the lighting that comes on when it gets dark is very pretty, and makes an evening walk very enjoyable. As any visitor might expect there are a lot of activities that take place here, ranging from theatre and cinema to exhibitions and festivals. From Tuesday to Thursday between 11am and 2pm it is possible to book a guided tour of areas both accessible to the public and not accessible, though this must be booked in advance. However, the entire Matadero and most exhibitions, etc, are free to enter.
