Besides the famous sight of Nelson’s Column situated in the middle of Trafalgar Square, which commemorates the British hero Admiral Horatio Nelson, the north side of the square is dominated by an impressiveロンドン、トラファルガー広場の中央にそびえ建つ有名なネルソン記念碑―イギリスの勇敢なヒーロー、ホレーショ・ネルソンを讃えている―の後ろにあたる北側に、多大な評価をうけ厳かな雰囲気で佇む「ナショナル・ギャラリー」がある。19世紀初頭、ロンドンは芸術界の中心として繁栄しており、それによって多くの芸術家やパトロンたちが恒久的な国立のギャラリーを求めた。元々ナショナル・ギャラリーは1824年に初めて創立されたのだが、展示空間の狭さと周辺の建設ラッシュから、1832年にトラファルガー広場に建て替えを行ったのだ。1834年に新たに建てられたナショナル・ギャラリーは、それ以来180年もの間、その時代その時代に活躍するアーティストや熱心な美術愛好家たちを受け入れてきた。毎日大勢の来館者は思い思いにギャラリーを歩いてまわり、2000を超える作品を、それらが有名な作品であることを一寸も疑うことなく鑑賞している。
展示室内は広く天井の高い部屋の組み合わせから成っており、展示室ごとに時代を一定の期間に区切ることで構成されている。例えば、入り口を入って右手の部屋には1700年～1900年代のファイン・アート、向かって左手の部屋には1500年～1600年代の作品、そして後ろの部屋には1600年～1700年代といった具合だ。また、本館からつながるセインズベリー棟には1250年～1500年代の芸術品が展示されている。つまり、一度に700年分もの作品を観れてしまう計算だ。本館の下階には展示室とショップ、カフェ、エデュケーション・センターが備えられ、セインズベリー棟をさらに下階へおりると、展示室とダイニングホール、シアターまでもある。ナショナル・ギャラリーを観てまわるにあたり、ぜひとも手にとってほしいのがフロアマップだ。そこに書いてある通り、展示室には番号がふられている。45番展示室にはヴァン・ゴッホとセザンヌ作品、9番展示室にはベニスから収集した絵画というように、簡単にお目当ての作品へたどりつけるようになっている。また、一般的なギャラリーではあまりない特徴として、ナショナルギャラリーは金曜日のみ夜９時まで開館しており、バーや音楽、トークイベントなど種類によって別途料金で楽しむことができる。
ナショナル・ギャラリーの展示室はまさに憎いほどよく考えられており、収集されコレクションとなる作品も相当のものだ。9番展示室にはアンソニー・ヴァン・ダイクの絵が展示されており、その中にはチャールズ一世の自画像もある。1649年に自身の死刑執行という結果をもたらした英国市民戦争の始まる1642年の数年前に描かれたものだ。統治者が当時世間からどう見られたいと思っていたのか、もたらす影響を考慮しつつこんなにも大きな自画像を制作する画家が300年以上も前に存在したなんて、とても想像しがたい。34番展示室では今日の世界と比較しうる1750年～1850年代のイギリス風景画を展示している。ジョン・コンスタブルの絵画「乾草車」は過去の一風景を垣間見、現在とよく似ているようでそれでも明らかな違いが存在することを気づかせてくれる。また23番展示室はレンブラントの20年に渡るスタイルの発展を追った展示となっている。簡素な女性の絵―妻ヘンドリック・ストッフェルによく似た女性が描かれた「水浴する女」―は、画家の視線を通すことによって日常の一場面でさえも一流の絵画になるのだということを示している。午後の時間を使えばすべての部屋を通り歩いて作品を鑑賞してまわることができるのだが、それでもそれぞれの作品に込められた意味や歴史、そして、見たものを我々になんとしてでも伝えようとしたその画家について考えさせられるだろう。
ナショナル・ギャラリーでは常に新しいアートをとり込むことにも力を入れている。ティツィアーノの「ダイアナとカリスト」や1700年代にボドレイ伯爵によって所有されたコレクション、そして若手のアーティストによるコンテンポラリー・アートも３年以上前から展示続けている。またホールでは、アーティスト自身による作品解説のトークイベントもあり、毎日のフリートークやツアーも盛況だ。ナショナル・ギャラリーのウェブサイトでは全作品に対する研究成果の情報を明確に公示しているし、もちろんギャラリーへのアクセス情報も載っている。研究者向けページでは「絵画の素材・技術に関する研究と絵画における科学実験」にフォーカスした紀要「ナショナル・ギャラリー・テクニカル・ブリテン」へもアクセス可能だ。アーティスト向けには、次世代を担うアーティストを対象に２年間ナショナルギャラリーで制作作業を行うことができるスキームを展開している。最後に、ナショナル・ギャラリーでは絵画作品群にインスパイアされた人に対し、もっと自分のクリエイティブな部分を膨らませるためのイベントが開かれている。それはトーク・ドローイング・イベントというもので、アーティストまたは講師によるトークがありつつ、自分で絵を描くということを後押ししてくれる。事前に予約が必要だが、無料のイベントだ。

In the early nineteenth century London was becoming a flourishing centre of art, because of this, artists and patrons of art alike began calling for a permanent national gallery. The first National Gallery opened in 1824, however due to lack of space and overcrowding construction began on a new building in Trafalgar Square in 1832. In 1834 the new building for The National Gallery opened its doors and for 180 years since then it has welcomed in successive generations of artists and avid art fans. Every day large numbers of visitors make their way into the gallery and with over two thousand paintings to be seen it is no surprise why it is so famous.
The interior of the building is in the form of a series of large rooms with high ceilings, each room showcases a certain kind of art from a particular period in history. For example, when upon entering the National Gallery by going through the rooms on your right you will find art from 1700 to 1900, if you go left there is art from 1500 to 1600, the rooms at the back of the building are for 1600 to 1700 and in the Sainsbury Wing there are paintings from 1250 to 1500. All in all you can view at your leisure nearly 700 years of art. In the lower level there are exhibition rooms, shops and cafes, as well as an Education Centre and in the Sainsbury Wing there are additional levels with more exhibition rooms, a dining hall and even a theatre. It is a very good idea to get a floor plan in order to aid your visit, all of the rooms are numbered and for example in room 45 you can find paintings by Van Gogh and Cézanne while room 9 has art from Venice. In an unusual twist to what would normally be expected from a normal gallery the National Gallery is open on Friday evenings until 9pm with a bar, music and special talks, though for some of these there is an admissions charge.
This gallery is very thought provoking and the collection of art that is gathered here is astounding. Room 9 has been reserved for art by Anthony van Dyke and includes a marvellous portrait of King Charles I a few years before the English Civil War started in 1642, which led to the king’s execution in 1649. It is incredible to imagine an artist working on this massive portrait over 300 years ago while considering the implications of how rulers wanted to be viewed at that time. Room 34 provides an interesting contrast to today’s world as you can see landscapes of Great Britain from 1750 to 1850, paintings such as John Constable’s Stratford Mill allows us to look through a window into the past, a past that is very familiar yet so different. Room 23 shows the development of Rembrandt’s style over a period of 20 years including a very simple picture of a woman, most likely his wife Hendrickje Stoffels, bathing in a stream and showing us that even a normal everyday scene can become a great painting through the vision of an artist. It is very easy on a free afternoon to walk through all of the rooms and admire the art, but quickly you will be made to consider the meaning behind each picture, the history inside each painting and the artists who managed to give us a glimpse of what they could see. It is a humbling and awe inspiring experience.
The National Gallery works hard to bring new art into the rooms for exhibitions and displays, including such work as Titian’s Diana and Callisto, a collection once owned by The Comte de Vaudreuil in the 1700s and more contemporary art by young offenders over the last three years. In the theatre there are frequent talks regarding artists and their works of art, as well as daily free talks and tours. The website itself is clearly the result of a lot of hard work as information can be found on all paintings, and help on organizing your visit. For researchers there is a special section about the help you can receive as well as free access to the National Gallery Technical Bulletin which is focused on the ‘study of the materials and techniques of painting, and the scientific examination of paintings’ and for artists there is a Associate Artist Scheme which allows leading contemporary artists to work with the National Gallery for two years. Finally, for those who feel inspired by all the paintings held here there are also opportunities to develop your own creative side by attending a Talk and Draw event which includes a talk by an artist/lecturer followed by a chance to make your own drawing. It is a free event, but needs to be booked in advance.
