Photographer Yasuyuki Kasagi has shot various Yokohama art scenes like Kogane Studio and the art facility ZAIM that closed shop in March 2010. Kasagi was born in Kyoto, earned his graduate degree from Doshisha University,2010年3月に閉館したZAIMや、黄金スタジオなど横浜のアートシーンの撮影を多く手がけている笠木靖之氏。

, and worked as a salaryman before making the shift into photography. He attempts to capture pictures freely, untethered by theories. Currently based in Yokohama, Kasagi continues to cultivate his sensibilities as a photographer.

What made you decide to become a photographer?

After graduating from college, I was a regular salaryman, but I have always enjoyed photography. I wanted to do something I liked, and make a living by taking pictures. I first entered a photography production company, and gained experience as an assistant. There, I worked for 11 years, mainly in advertising, like catalogues and posters.

Were there any memorable shoots?

Shoots that I enjoyed were ones where I was allowed to take photos based on my own sensibilities. In advertising photos, abiding by theories to accurately convey an object’s shape or color is fundamental. But for image photos, colors and shapes can change in order to make something “look cool,” so it lets the photographer take pictures based on his or her sensibilities. Shoots that allow such expressiveness are fun.

I have also been an official photographer for the Fuji Rock Festival since 2006. There are 3 photographers, but 2 of us have to cover all the stage venues. Traveling among the different stages is hard work, physically. Still, the appeal is that we get to see the performances from the best positions.

Do you often view art?

I’m not especially well versed in art, but I often take pictures of exhibits for work, so I write my observations from such exhibits on my blog. I take pictures for Kogane Studio on a regular basis, so I shoot the Kagane-cho Bazaar in September, and their monthly open studios among other events. I also had the chance to work for Yokohama Keizai Shimbun, which led to an opportunity to take photographic records of ZAIM‘s gallery exhibitions as well as pictures for ZAIM’s closing report.

What are your thoughts on the Yokohama art scene?

I understand that Yokohama is trying to approach art as a citywide effort, but their goal is unclear. There are many people who are considered artists, but I think it is difficult to get any message across unless they do something that can reach out to a large population. Yokohama is employing art as a means of revitalizing the city. But contrary to its efforts, there are not many people seeking or viewing art. There are genuinely interesting artworks, but the good and the bad are all mixed together. As artwork presenters, the city should be able to say: “we can wholeheartedly recommend these pieces,” and not just: “we have a variety of art.” I think this was a factor absent in ZAIM’s management.

Can you share with us your recommendations for Yokohama tourists?

Personally, I like Honmoku. There isn’t as much vestige of the older era left, but there used to be a fashion town called MYCAL Honmoku. It was at the forefront of trends where people would gather. And before MYCAL, there were US military homes, military-related shops, and areas where Japanese people could not enter. Traces of such an era still remain; it is a great area where you can feel time progressing. I like the bar “IG” and “The Golden Cup” with its live music. “Boogie Cafe“, where Ken Yokoyama comes to practice, has a great atmosphere as well. There is also a clothing shop called “HONMOKU OZ” where you can still use American dollars today.

Yokohama’s appeal to tourists, I think, is its port city image. I am more drawn to the foreign atmosphere of the city with places like the US military’s residential area. I also like the old port feel it still holds. Tokyo has a ton of photographers. As a photographer, I would be happy if I were viewed as a Yokohama photographer with a slightly different angle.
