The origin of the Yuda hot spring is old, as its name had already been mentioned in the year 1200. The hot spring itself is believed to have been discovered earlier than that湯田温泉の由来は古く、正治2年（1200年）にはすでにその名が記されており、温泉が発見されたのは、それ以前と考えられている。長禄三年（1459年）に発せられた大内氏の法令に、「夜中湯田の湯へ入る事」という入浴規則があり、温泉が生活に係わっていたことがわかっている。また、湯田温泉には「白狐伝説」があり、その昔、権現山のお寺の池に、傷ついた一匹の白きつねが毎晩傷ついた足をつけ、直していたのを目撃され、これが湯田温泉発見のいわれとなったと言い伝えられている。
湯の成分は、アルカリ性単純温泉で、肌によく馴染むやわらかい湯が特徴で、美肌の湯としても有名。神経痛、筋肉痛、関節痛、五十肩、運動麻痺、関節のこわばり、うちみ、くじき、慢性消化器病、ぢ疾、冷え性、病後回復期、疲労回復、健康増進に効能があるといわれている。また、湯量も豊富で、1日に2,000トンもの天然温泉が湧き出ている。それゆえ、湯田温泉内には、無料で利用することのできる足湯が五箇所設けられており、市民に親しまれている。

The Yuda hot spring has been long known to be involved in the local customs, as in an ordinance by the Ouchi clan issued in 1459, there exists a bathing rule that states “No bathing in Yuda at night.” Yuda hot spring is also known for the “White Fox Legend” story, where a white fox had been witnessed curing its wounded leg at the hot spring. The legend has it that the white fox had led the discovery of the Yuda hot spring. The amount of the hot water is also plentiful, as each day 2000 ton of hot water gush out naturally.
The water is alkaline based and its soft hot water is famous for treating the skin as the warm water fits soothingly to the skin. It is also said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, joint pain, stiff shoulder, paralysis, stiff joints, bruises, sprains, digestive diseases, fig diseases, sensitivity to the cold, convalescence, fatigue and the promotion of health. Therefore, there exists five foot baths situated in Yuda that can be utilized for free, and are popular among the citizens.
