The artist-run-space ‘XYZ collective’ has just opened this summer in Tokyo’s Setagaya ward. The director, Mr, COBRA (a video artist/ MIHOKANNO member) alongside Mr. Soshito Matsubara (a contemporary artist/ MIHOKANNO member) 東京・世田谷地区に2011年夏オープンしたアーティスト・ラン・スペース「XYZ collective」（エックスワイジー・コレクティブ）。ディレクターのCOBRA氏（ビデオアーティスト／MIHOKANNOメンバー）、松原壮志朗氏（現代美術作家／MIHOKANNOメンバー）、服部円氏（編集者）が中心となり、アーティスト・マネージメントオフィス「SNOW Contemporary」、レコードショップ、ブックレーベル「BOOK SHOP YAMATO」が同居する。アーティスト・ラン・スペースとはスタジオとオルタナティブ・スペースを兼ね備えた、アーティストが自主的に運営する場のこと。アーティストのアトリエにより近いギャラリーといった感じだ。
このスペースの構想は、発起人であるCOBRA氏がオーストラリアのメルボルンでアーティスト・ラン・スペースに出会ったことから始まっている。メルボルンにはパーティ文化があり、そこで展覧会のオープンな雰囲気に感銘を受けたという。そこで体験した活気に満ちた雰囲気や、アーティストたちの綿密な交流のある場を日本でも実現させたいと思ったことが、今回の立ち上げにつながった。また、アートにとどまらず、デザイン、ファッション、文学、音楽などをつなぎ、日本独自の文化発信基地となるような場にしたいと語る。そういった場は、領域横断的な表現が増えてきた近頃、ちょうど求められているスペースではないだろうか。
第一回のエキジビジョンではSNOW Contemporaryの飯沼英樹氏の個展が開かれ、鮮やかな印象を残した。今後もSNOW Contemporaryのディレクター石水美冬氏、キュレータの窪田研二氏プロデュースの展示を始め、XYZディレクターによるさまざまな企画が展開される予定。
メインスペースの隣には、大地岳紀氏がオーナーであるレコードショップが展開され、パートナーとして以前渋谷にあった、クララオーディオショップの野界氏も参加している。木の棚に所狭しと並べられたレコードのある一角は、どこかヨーロッパの家の屋根裏部屋のような、不思議な雰囲気。扱われているのは1900年代の蓄音機でしか聞けないレコードや16mmフィルム、アートブックなど。つい最近作られたばかりのはずなのに昔からそこにあるようなファンタジックな雰囲気は、野界氏が蒐集した物たちのせいか。
さらにその奥には、アーティストグループMIHOKANNOのメンバーである千葉正也氏、万代洋輔氏が立ち上げたブックレーベル「BOOK SHOP YAMATO」のスペースがある。入口には、XYZ collectiveが震災後のプロジェクト「FAXINATION JAPAN」で制作した巨大な本が。そのページに一枚一枚貼られているのは、世界中のアーティストからファックスで寄せられたメッセージ。中にはビル・セイラーやタイラー・ワックスマン、雨宮庸介、青山悟の作品も。
ロケーションは渋谷からバスで20分ほど行った住宅地にあり、リラックスした雰囲気の中で鑑賞できる。三宿周辺のおしゃれなお店まで足を伸ばすのもいい。少し時間を作れば、ちょっとだけ都会を脱してアートに触れる機会がある。

Text: Yuko Miyakoshi and Ms. Madoka Hattori (an editor) have been taking the lead in working and managing these three business together: an artists office ‘SNOW Contemporary’, a record store and a book label “BOOK SHOP YAMATO.” Their goal for ‘XYZ collective’ is to have both studios and alternative spaces managed by artists. It’s a gallery but more like a studio for artists.
Planning began for this space when the sponsor, Mr. Cobra, found an artist-run-space in Melbourne, Australia. Mr. Cobra was deeply impressed with the atmosphere at the opening party of the gallery because of the party culture in Melbourne. His desire to recreate the spirited atmosphere and to have a place where artists could communicate closely, as he had experienced in Melbourne, was what led the XYZ Collective to be opened. Mr. Cobra says that he wants to make this place to be a Japanese launchpad where not only art but also design, fashion, literature and music can connect each other. Such a place must have a huge demand these days since various territories have been crossed over each other.
The very first exhibit was a solo show by Mr. Hideki Iinuma from SNOW Contemporary and it left a vivid impression on the audience. After this exhibit, various events will be planned, starting with exhibits produced by Mifuyu Ishimizu, a director of SNOW Contemporary, and Kenji Kubota, a curator.
Next to the main space, a record store managed by Mr. Takenori Ohchi has its door open. Mr. Yakai from Clala Audio Shop is also contributing to the store as a partner. The wooden shelves, packed with records, provide a unique vibe like the attic of a European house. The store mainly carries records that can be played only on gramophones from the 1900’s, 16mm films and art books. Although this store is new, it has a nostalgic and fantastic vibe going on. This is probably because of the collection by Mr. Yakai.
After the record store, there is a book label ‘BOOK SHOP YAMATO’ started by Mr. Masaya Chiba and Mr. Yosuke Bandai who are both members of ‘MIHOKANNO.’ There is a huge book at a main door. The book was made as a project ‘FAXINATION JAPAN’ by XYZ collective after the earthquake. Every page has a message from artists all over the world via fax. Among many amazing pieces, the book also has pieces by Bill Saylor, Taylor Waxman, Yusuke Amemiya and Satoru Aoyama.
The XYZ collective is located in a residential area about twenty minutes away from Shibuya by bus. Because of the residential area, audiences can enjoy art in a relaxed atmosphere. From there, it might be a nice idea to extend your journey to the hip stores in Mishuku. If people really want to make a little bit of time, there is always the chance to be away from a hectic city and to enjoy art.
