The People’s Square in central Shanghai, where vehicles and crowds cross paths, is home of the Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theatre, and MoCA Shanghai; it is the heart of cultural Shanghai上海の中心部であり、車や人が交錯する人民広場。そこは上海博物館や上海大劇院、上海美術館、上海現代美術館の施設が集まり、文化の心臓部と言える。 人民広場北側の人民公園は、都会のど真ん中にありながら多くの木々に囲まれ、市民の憩いの場となっている。その中にひっそりと上海現代美術館（通称：MoCA）がある。
建物は、骨組みとガラスで構成されており、二階のスペースへ向かうために緩やかなスロープを登ると、そこは外光を取り込んだ吹き抜けの大きな空間となっている。この空間を効果的に利用した展示は、普段と違った目線で作品を見る事ができる。
上海現代美術館が使命として掲げているのは、上海から国内外へ中国のコンテンポラリーアートとデザインを広めていくこと。また、質の高い国外のクリエイティブな文化を、中国に導入すること。そして世界との文化交流を促進すること。上海在住の若手アーティストや、経済発展の面からも注目されつつあるインドやインドネシアのコンテンポラリーアートの展示もいち早く行われた。シャネルと共同でデザインの企画展も行われている。
上海現代美術館には観覧者に向けてアートツアーがある。ツアー以外にもアートに親しめるイベントを多数企画している。コンテンポラリーアートへの理解と認識を広げ、更に深くアートに触れることは、参加者にとって忘れられない経験となるだろう。

Text: Hiromi Nomoto. On the north side of the Square, surrounded by trees, is the People’s Park. MoCA Shanghai stands discretely in this urban oasis.
The building has a simple bare framework with glass. A gradual slope leads up to the second floor exhibition space, which receives plenty of sunlight with its high ceilings. Exhibits making good use of this space can present artwork from a unique perspective.
MoCA displays young Shanghai artists, but they are also forerunners in showcasing contemporary art from countries like India and Indonesia that are receiving attention from the global financial world as well. The museum has also undertaken a collaborative design exhibit with Chanel.
MoCA Shanghai’s mission is to disseminate Chinese contemporary art and design all over China and overseas. It also aims to introduce foreign creative culture of high quality into China, and to encourage cross-national relations.
The Museum holds art tours for visitors along with other events that are related to art. The opportunities offered at MoCA to interact and expand one’s understanding of contemporary art are sure to make an unforgettable experience for visitors.
