Located on the edge of the chic neighborhood of Williamsburg, Zenkichi: Modern Japanese Brasserie was opened in 2006 by Shaul Margulies and Motoko Watanabeアメリカのゲストに東京のダイニングを届けるため、異文化出身の二人、シャウル・マルグリーズとワタナベ・モトコが2006年、シックでおしゃれなウィリアムズバーグにモダン・ジャパニーズ・ブラッセリー「ゼンキチ」をオープンした。ゼンキチは四季に合わせた８品のコース料理「おまかせ」を味うことができる。多くの人々がこのレストランで小さな和食プレートを初めて味わう。選べるお酒も多く、お酒好きな人にはたまらない。
外観とは大きく対称的なゼンキチのミニマルでウッディな内装、廊下は竹でデザインされ、日本スタイルの個室に区切られている。これまでの４年間、ゼンキチはブルックリンで最もロマンチックなレストランとして選ばれた程だ。派手ではないけれど、その雰囲気は親密な時間を過ごすカップルには最適の空間だ。『約90％のお客様のが口コミで来られる方です』とマルグリーズは言う。
ゼンキチは２階建てとなっており、系列カフェ「ハウス・オブ・スモール・ワンダー」が日中、中庭でオープンしている。オーナーたちが、中庭のカフェの上に透明な天井を設け、建物の隣の２本の大きな木のために少しあけている。こういったオーガニックな環境は、ブランチを楽しむお客から素晴らしいとの反響がある。スモール・ワンダーはゼンキチとは違って、約20席のオープンスペースとなっており、レトロな音楽や装飾が多くの若者に人気だ。

Text: Qi Chen, an intercultural couple who look to bring a Tokyo dining experience to American customers. Zenkichi offers “Omakase” eight-course meals that changes with each season of the year. Many people had their first experience with small-plate Japanese cuisine at this restaurant. For drinkers, there is also a great range of sake to choose from.
From the outside, Zenkichi’s minimalist wooden decor is in great contrast with its interior, which are filled with small Japanese-style private booths. The hallways are adorned by bamboos. For the past four years, Zenkichi was voted by customers as one of the most romantic restaurants in Brooklyn. Indeed, the atmosphere is great for couples seeking an intimate night together. The restaurant does not try to be flashy. “90 percent of our customers found us by word-of-mouth,” said Margulies.
Zenkichi was built from a two-story house. Its sister café, House of Small Wonder, operates in the daytime in the courtyard of the house. The owners built a transparent ceiling over the café, and left openings for the two tall trees next to the house. This organic environment draws great review from customers looking to eat brunch. Unlike Zenkichi, House of Small Wonder offers more open space with about 20 seats. The retro music and decor bring many young visitors.
