Platform for Art delivers a programme that feeds directly on that reputation and reflects the quality and range of work to be seen all over the city. The programme was developed to create an environment for positive impact and to enhance and enrich the journeys of the passengers that are its audience.
Platform for Art is embedded within London Underground’s historic connection with art and design, a relationship that can be traced back for almost one hundred years. The distinctive round, blue and red station signs or Harry Beck’s ground breaking tube map are iconic designs recognised all over the world.
London Underground has been a pioneer in art and design since 1908 when Frank Pick began commissioning leading artists to work on London Underground poster campaigns. Such celebrated artists as Man Ray, Edward McKnight Kauffer and Graham Sutherland produced posters for the network.
