In 1856 in Freiberg a remarkable man was born, Sigmund Freud, who would become a pioneer in the field of psychoanalysis. His name and work in this field has become world renowned and even today his theories are applied across many fields1856年、フライベルグでそのすばらしい人物は誕生した。

. His youngest daughter, Anna Freud was also the founder of psychoanalytic child psychology and for sixty years the Anne Freud Centre has been helping children with mental health problems. Although originally Sigmund and his family lived in Vienna, by 1933 the rise of the Nazi party in Germany had led to his books being burned and in 1938 after Nazi Germany annexed Austria they fled to England. They moved to number 20 Maresfield Gardens in London where Sigmund stayed until his death in 1939 and his daughter lived there until her death in 1982. In 1986 the house was opened to the public as the Freud Museum in order to celebrate the life and work of Sigmund and Anna Freud.

The house is situated on a very pleasant and quiet street of homes, entering this building is akin to walking into someone’s home. On the ground floor there is a hallway, shop, Sigmund Freud’s study and a front room, as well as stairs to the first floor. In his study and front room there is an amazing collection of antiquities and books, when Sigmund left Vienna he brought as many of his things and books as possible, including the original couch where his patients would recline while Sigmund listened out of sight to their thoughts and feelings. The study and front room are absolutely fascinating just for the sheer volume of beautiful objects from around the world, there are over two thousand from ancient Greece, Rome, Egypt and the Orient, such as the head of a guardian figure from the Ming dynasty in 15th-17th century China which was intended to drive away evil spirits and a fragment of a Roman wall painting which is an astounding 2000 years old. The library includes books on a wide range of subjects in different languages; this together with the antiquities represents a man of amazing abilities and intellect.

The first floor includes a landing, exhibition room, video room and the Anna Freud Room. On the landing there are two portraits of Sigmund Freud, after Ferdinand Schmutzer completed a chalk and charcoal sketch Freud wrote him a letter thanking him for the trouble he took in ‘reproducing my ugly face’ and the pleasure he took in seeing it. The Anna Freud Room includes her own collection of books and furniture, including a loom from her bedroom. This intricate machine was used for weaving. On the wall there are certificates of some of the long list of honorary doctorates that she received, while one bookcase also includes a collection of books in Japanese. The exhibition room hosts alternate contemporary art and Freud themed exhibitions.

This remarkable house represents a unique combination of art, history and an exploration of the mind, visiting here is not only a window into history, but also very educational.
