A latest art museum is opening in Hong Kong on 29th May 2018. Named as “Tai Kwun“, meaning “Big Station”, it is located on Hollywood Road in Central, Hong Kong. This is a project by a Swiss architectual team Herzog & de Meuron, which is also the architect of Tate Modern in London, UK (2000) and the National Stadium Beijing in China (2008), also the upcoming M+ museum in Hong Kong (2019). Transformed from the former Central Police Station which was built in 1864, Tai Kwun has its own historical value to locals also it is a herritage spot. Being a hub of art exhibition, interiors and heritage, it is a new rise in Hong Kong with an art highlight.新たな美術館が2018年5月29日、香港にオープンした。香港の中心にあるハリウッド・ロードにあるこの美術館は「大きな駅」を意味する「タイ・クゥン」と名付けられた。これはスイスの建築チーム、ヘルツォーク&ド・ムーロンのプロジェクトで、彼らは2000年には英国ロンドンのテートモダンを、2008年には北京国家体育場の建築も手がけ、更に2019年には香港のM+博物館をも手がける予定だ。1864年に建設された元中央警察署から改装されたタイ・クゥンは地元住民にとっても歴史的な価値があり、さらには遺産的な場所でもある。アート展、内装、遺産の拠点となるこの場所は、香港のアートをハイライトする注目スポットとなるだろう。
タイ・クゥンはそれ自体の敷地と観光案内所で構成されている。古い刑務所は旧中央警察署から復元されたもので、建築家は古い門、鍵、レンガを全て残そうとした。刑務所の部屋の中では昔の刑務所生活のドキュメンタリーが投影され、訪れた人は昔の刑務所を体感し、囚人がそこにとどまった様子を想像することができる。会場の歴史的な部分とは対照的に、タイ・クゥンのアート展示センターははるかに近代的でミニマルだ。その例として、エレガントなシンボルで、さらにタイ・クゥンのアイコンともいえる階段がある。
タイ・クゥンではバラエティに富んだアート展の開催が予想されるだろう。オープニング・エキシビションは、中国医学、彫刻、薬理学、科学の美学を探求する香港の若手アーティストたちに焦点を当てたものだ。屋外劇場では、「夢のような馬」に関するフランスのパフォーマンスグループによる光のアートインスタレーションが行われる。日常生活で使える陶器、普段着やアクセサリーを販売するライフスタイルショップや、その隣にはレストランもある。
近代的なインテリアと建物遺産の構造によって作りあげられた非常に素晴らしくリラックスした雰囲気を持つこの美術館は、香港の近くに来た際にはぜひ訪れたい場所だ。

Translation: Yumiko MiyagawaTai Kwun is comprised of Tai Kwun site and visitor centre. The old prison area is restored from the former Central Police Station. Architect tried to remain all the old gates, locks and even the bricks. Inside the prison room, they are playing a documentry projection of old prison living. You can experience the old prison and imagine how the prisoner stayed there.
A variety of art exhibitions are expected to happen in Tai Kwun. Opening exhibition is about young Hong Kong artists exploring the aesthetics of Chinese medicine, sculpture, pharmacology and science. In the outdoor theatre, a light art installation by a French performance group about “Dreamlike Horses”. There are also lifestyle shops selling daily life ceramics, easy clothes and accessories. You can find restaurants next to the shops.
Come visit the place and the shows if you are around Hong Kong, it has a very nice and relaxing atmosphere created by the modern interior and heritage structure.
