The Colon Theatre is known as one of the world’s top 3 opera houses along with Scala theater in Milan and the Opera in Paris. This is the symbol of Buenos Aires and the country’s proud heritageパリのオペラ座、ミラノのスカラ座と並ぶ世界三大劇場のひとつとして知られるコロン劇場。ブエノスアイレスの象徴、国の誇るべき文化遺産である。1857年に開設された旧コロン劇場は、五月広場に隣接していたが国立銀行に売却された。1908年5月25日に今のコロン劇場が開場。記念すべき最初のオペラは、ジョゼッペ・ヴェルディの「アイーダ」。
約58,000m2もの面積を占めるコロン劇場のメインホールは蹄鉄状になっていて、イタリアとフランスのオペラ建築の影響が強い。全部で2,478席、立ち見席500という膨大な収容数を誇る。円天井を飾るのはアルゼンチンを代表する画家ラウル・ソルディにより1970年に制作された見事な天井画である。
このコロン劇場の舞台に立った著名人の中には、マリア・カラス、リヒャルト・シュトラウス、ストラヴィンスキー、アルトゥーロ・トスカニーニ、ルチアーノ・ババロッティがいる。
老朽化が進んだために2006年から約90億円をかけた修復工事が行われ、2010年5月25日、アルゼンチンの独立革命200周年記念日という国を挙げた盛大な祝典にふさわしく、リニューアルオープンした。４年間の改修工事の結果、目を眩ませるほどの豪華絢爛さを取り戻した。音響は世界最高とされ、建築、内外装飾ともに世界三大劇場の名にふさわしい美を讃えている。

Text: Mami Goda. The former Colon Theatre was opened in 1857 at the May Square, but later sold to the National Bank. The presente Colon Theatre was opened on May 25 in 1908 at the actual location. The memorable first opera was Guiseppe Verdi’s “Aida” .
The theatre occupies about 58,000 square meter. The famous main hall in the shape of horseshoe is strongly influenced by Italian and French opera architecture of that period. It has a total capacity of 2478 seats, but also an additional 500 people standing. The dome was painted in 1970 by Raoul Sordi, one of the most important Argentine painters.
Amoung the leading figures who performed in the Colon Theatre, are the Maria Callas, Richard Strauss, Igor Stravinsky, Arturo Toscanini, Luciano Pabarotti, etc.
The aging theatre was refurbished from 2006 with 100 million dollars. And on May 25, 2010, reopend its door in the occasion of Argentina’s biccentennial. Results of four years of renovation the Colon Theatre found again its blinding splendor. The Colon has the world’s best sound quality and deserves the name of honoring world’s top 3 Opera Houses by its marvellous architecture and décors.
