あるおだやかな日曜日の朝、ブエノスアイレスの近郊の、古くから人気のあるスポットの１つ、ラ・ボカへ出かけた時のこと。It was a sunny Sunday morning when I took a ride to La Boca, one of the most ancient and popular neighborhoods of Buenos Aires. I didn’t really know what to expect, because I used to go there as a child and it wasn’t a pretty landscape for me.

北ロンドンのホロウェイは、観光目的で訪れるロンドンとは全く表情が異なる街。イギリス唯一の女囚刑務所、その名もホロウェイ刑務所があることで有名。街のまん中を走るホロウェイ・ロード沿いで、しばし移民が違法タバコを安値でバラ売りする模様がThe area of Holloway in north London is not a prime location for tourists. Famous for the Holloway Prison (the only all-female prison in UK), the Holloway Road that runs down the middle of this town is also a haunt for immigrants selling illegal tobacco.

UCバークレー大学がら車で15分、 閑散とした工業地区の一角に、使い古された中古の冷蔵庫、70年代製のTVなど、膨大な量の廃品が並んでいるのが見える。 一見、 ゴミ処理場のように見えるこの建物、 実は知る人ぞ知る「アーバン・オーレ」という巨大なジャンクストアなのである。Located in a rather dull industrial neighborhood in Berkeley, Urban Ore is a locals’ hidden hangout spot for scoping out unusual treasures. Formally described as “Discard Management Center”, Urban Ore may be defined as more than ordinary so-called junk stores.

ドイツ共和国宮殿Palast der Republik
共和国宮殿。その建造物は1990年、旧ドイツ共和国（東ドイツ）議会により、取り壊しが決定された。アスベストを使用した建造物であるが故「人体に危険を及ぼす恐れがある」、表向きにはその様な理由が立てられてはいるが、Palast der Republik – the building was decided to be destroyed by the former Federal Republic of Germany (Eastern Germany) Congress in 1990. Becasue asbestos had been used for the building, they publicly gave the reason that “it would be harmful for human’s health”.

ホロコースト記念碑HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL
2005年5月12日、先のドイツ連邦共和国の終戦60周年を記念して、「虐殺されたヨーロッパのユダヤ人のための記念碑」（通称ホロコースト記念碑）がオープンした。
この施設は、時遡る事1988年、ジャーナリスト、レア・ロッシュの呼びかけから始まり、On May 12th, 2005, commemorating the sixtieth anniversary of the end of the war in the Federal Republic of Germany, a Holocaust Memorial, in honor of the hundreds of thousands of European Jews that were persecuted and murdered was opened.
