While trekking to Taro Okamoto Museum of Art located in the premises of Ikuta Ryokuchi Park in Kawasaki, you will feel purified as you enjoy walking in the park, listening to natural sounds生田緑地公園内にある岡本太郎美術館に入るまでに、まるで浄化されるような気分になるのは、時間をかけてゆっくりと蛙の声やひぐらしや風などの自然の生物からのみ生まれる騒音を聴きながら歩いていくからだろうか。この場所はきっと四季のどの時期に訪れても、解りやすい形で自然を感じさせてくれるに違いない。その中を抜けると岡本太郎美術館が現れる。階段を上ると奥の方に巨大な彫刻「母の塔」が、まるでこの敷地内全体を見下ろすようにそびえたっている。
岡本太郎は最も有名な日本人作家の中でも、殊更印象深い雰囲気を持ち合わせた作家だ。『芸術は爆発だ』—恐らく美術において、ここまで印象深い作品と言葉を残した日本人はいないのではないだろうか。
ここには、沢山の作品が彼自身によって寄贈されて展示されている。見応えがあるのは作品もさることながら、岡本太郎に関する新聞を筆頭とする記録の展示だ。岡本太郎自身を作品から知るのみでなく、当時の社会からの目線で見ることができるのも非常に貴重だ。
太陽の塔の中のイメージで設立された展示会場も魅力的で、仕掛けや様々な見せ方が工夫され、高低のある場所では、大きな彫刻を上からでも下からでも好きな角度で観ることができる。会場は、常設と企画展示会場があり、寄贈された多くの作品は年に四回の配置換えがある。その中には、写真も多く残っており見所の一つとなっている。
展示を見ている時に一人の子供が父親に抱かれながら泣いていた。岡本太郎の作品があまりに感情をむきだして、少しの恐怖を力強さと共に感じるものであるのかということを、岡本太郎が言っていた、『美術は心地良いものであってはいけない』という言葉と共に思い出した。後に見たその子供は楽しそうに会場を走り回っていた。
いわゆる展示会場よりも全体的に暗いにも関わらず、妙に落ち着く太陽の塔の内部をイメージして設計されたというこの会場は、つまり、岡本太郎の体内でもあるということなのだろう。時折休みながら時間をかけてゆっくりと、岡本太郎と対話を試みたいと感じた。

Text: Memi Mizukami and the voices of frogs and cicadas in the summer. Passing though the woods, we finally arrive at the museum. As you go upstairs, the huge sculpture “Tower of Mother” welcomes you as a symbol of this place.
Taro Okamoto is one of the most famous artists in Japan. He left a great and famous quote, ”Art is Explosion,” which could be the most impressive quote you could think of in the Japanese art scene.
Many of Okamoto’s works are donated by himself. In addition to showcasing a collection of his artworks, the museum offers for display newspapers documentations and other media that mention the artist. Different points of views are reported in the newspaper clippings, giving the worthwhile social perspective of this figure.
The interior is designed under the concept of “Tower of the Sun” which is well-known as a symbol of Expo ‘70 held in Osaka. It has two exhibition spaces: a permanent collection hall and temporary exhibition gallery. It exhibits the donated artworks, changing four times during a year. You can also enjoy viewing many photographs of the artist.
I saw a child crying in his father’s arm in the museum. That reminded me of Okamoto’s phrase “art isn’t pleasant ”. His work is too emotional and a little scary to see for pure people like kids. But later I saw the child running around and enjoying the exhibit.
Despite being a little darker than other normal exhibition spaces, you can feel calm and comfortable inside the museum. With the theme of the interior capturing Tower of the Sun, it could be said that inside of the museum is like inside Okamoto’s body. You could try to talk to him, viewing his works of art.
