As General Research’s bookish half, COW BOOKS does well in reading into the literary tastes of Nakameguro’s individualistic crowd. Standing outside its main store in Nakameguroジェネラルリサーチの本に関する一面として、カウブックスは中目黒の個性的な人たちの文学的嗜好を熟知している。中目黒の本店前に立つと、白黒の牛のマスコットが入るようにと手招きしているような感じを受けるだろう。
カウブックスは2002年に文芸評論家の松浦弥太郎とジェネラルリサーチの小林節正の２人によって、多くの人と可能な限り好きな本を共有することを目的として設立された。松浦氏の鑑識眼と趣味の良いスタッフによって精選された本の数々は、きっと今までの書店では見たことがないものばかりだろう。カウブックスでは、いつでも１杯350円のコーヒーを飲みながらリラックスして本を選べるというユニークな経験ができる。
店では、ビンテージマガジンから自費出版に至るまで多様な種類の本を仕入れており、すべての本に誇りをもっている。大型書店では見つけることが難しい本も、カウブックスの本棚でならば見つけることができる。 「ブルータス」や「ポパイ」や「暮らしの手帖」といった雑誌のバックナンバーを取り揃えていて、それらは希少な写真集とともに陳列スペースに置かれている。気楽に楽しく人生を送ろうという精神のカウブックスは、まさにビートニクの時代を紹介したり変わらぬ関心を向けることで、高い評価を得ている。
本とは別に、カウブックスでは店名にもなっている“牛”をモチーフにしたオリジナル商品も販売している。店のシンプルで落ち着いた雰囲気を反映して、商品はスタイリッシュでありながらも役に立つものばかりだ。シックなマグカップやTシャツやキッチュなしおりなどの品揃えがある。また絵はがきなどの収集品も、親交がある外国の本屋から仕入れている。また、カウブックスは南青山（南青山 3-13-14 Dragonfly Café 2F）にも姉妹店がある。

COW BOOKS was founded in September 2002 as a collaboration between book critic Yataro Matsuura and General Research’s Setsumasa Kobayashi, who wished to share the books they loved with as many people as possible. Its eclectic selection of books, hand-picked by Matsuura’s discerning eye, and attentive staff make this bookstore one of the best retail experiences you will ever get. It presents a unique book retail experience where customers can choose their books in a relaxed environment, even having a cup of coffee (315 yen a cup) at the same time.
The store takes pride in the titles they stock, which range from vintage magazines to independently published books. While they may be harder to find in larger chain bookstores, they certainly can be found in the shelves of COW BOOKS. Vintage copies of Brutus and Popeye as well as Gurashi no Techo share shelf-space with rare photobooks. In living up to its easy-going character, COW BOOKS is credited with introducing and sustaining interest in the Beat Generation.
Aside from books, COW BOOKS also sells their own line of products featuring the eponymous Cow. Reflecting the simple and relaxed atmosphere of the store, their products are not only stylish but useful. Customers can choose from a selection of chic coffee mugs, t-shirts or kitschy spectacle bookmarks amongst their product line. The bookstore also brings in a selection of ephemera from fellow foreign independent bookstores.
COW BOOKS also has a sister store in Minami Aoyama (Dragonfly Café 2F 3-13-14 Minami Aoyama).
