Shimokitazawa is an area where is known as the theatrical place as well as the place for music lovers, as there you can find many theaters and established bars and live houses56年という長い歴史を持つ「ジャズ喫茶 マサコ」の閉店が惜しまれた下北沢。下北沢は、本多劇場、ザ・スズナリなど小劇場が点在し、演劇の街としても有名だ。また、数々のミュージシャンや著名人が訪れた「トラブルピーチ」「メリージェーン」などの老舗のバーが今も存在し、ライブハウスなどもあることから音楽を愛する者の街でもある。個性的なショップが狭い道路に軒を連ね、若者にも人気だ。最近は大手飲食店・チェーン店などの進出も目立ち、アンダーグラウンドなイメージも以前よりだいぶ薄まってしまった感が否めないが、そんな下北沢で「コミューン」はちょっと気になる存在だ。

ZINEと雑貨の販売スペースとギャラリースペースからなる「コミューン」は、女の子が抱く“カワイイ”という感情を入り口に、訪れた人がそこで出会えるものからそれぞれの世界を広げるきっかけになってくれたらと2009年にオープン。アメリカから買い付けた雑貨やヴィンテージのポストカード、まだ他ではなかなか手に入らないクラフト作家の作品など、ただ“カワイイ”だけじゃない、ちょっとひと癖あるようなものが小さな雑貨スペースに並ぶ。

最近はZINEを目にすることが多くなったが、『せっかく自分でつくったものだから、ちゃんと自分で置く場所まで選んで欲しいし、ここがそういう場所でありたい』と店長のサトウさんが話すように、SHIFTでも紹介しているナヌークの小冊子など個性的な作品に出会える場所だ。カフェはドリンクのみ。ホワイトキューブだけよりも、人と人の繋がりを生みやすい装置、きっかけとして、誰かの部屋に遊びに行っているような感覚で楽しんでほしいと言う。

企画展の他にDJ Codomoのライブなど、バリエーション豊かなギャラリーイベントは、サトウさんがキュレーターでない分、枠組もなく受け入れられ、展示者の気持ちになって実現できているという証なのかもしれない。場所は、下北沢北口。蛍光ピンクで書かれた「コミューン」のロゴマークの旗を目印に、レンガ色のビルの２階だ。

Text: mina. Crowded with unique shops standing along narrow streets, the town is popular for young generations as well. Located in such town, Commune is another place where you might want to check out.

With a shop space and a gallery space, Commune was opened in 2009 with an aim to offer a place where visitors can explore their world with ‘kawaii’ products and zines. They feature imported goods and vintage postcards, and craft works created by artists.

Commune is a place where you can find NANOOK’s zine. “I want people to choose shops where they want to sell their zines, and I want to make this place where people want to distribute the zine,” says the owner of Commune. There is a cafe place where serves drinks only. The owner mentions he wants to offer the place where communication with people and want them to visit there as they are like visiting friends house.

The gallery space offers a variety of events like a live by DJ Codomo. Commune is located on the 2nd floor of the brick-colored building. The landmark is the flag with a pink logo on it.
