スイスを代表する建築家マリオ・ボッタが手がけたことで知られるワタリウム美術館は1999年9月に外苑西通りに開館。展覧会作りの世界的な専門家を招き、コンテンポラリーアートの発展に国際的に貢献しているアーティストの参加を実現Designed by one of the leading Swiss architect Mario Botta, the Watari Museum of Contemporary Art aka WATARI-UM Museum is opened its door at Gaien Nishi Street in September 1999し、そのコレクションには国内はもとより、アンディ・ウォーホル、ナム・ジュン・パイク、キース・ヘリングや、リチャード・アヴェドン、ロバート・フランクなど世界的に著名な海外アーティストによる作品を数多く所蔵している。

また国際的アートにおける日本の位置の再検討を迫る場としてだけでなく、日本やアジアのアーティストについても丹念な関係を構築するなど、世界に目を向けた幅広い視野で様々な試みを展開している。

ワタリウム美術館では、定期的に展覧会を開催する他、展覧会に関係した講演会やワークショップだけでなくテーマ別の研究会、講演会、ワークショップを年間を通じて開催。1996年よりスタートした、異なる分野のクリエイターと子供達がコミュニケーションをはかるワークショッププログラム「一日幼稚園+小学校」や、日本の住まいと庭園の移り変わりを一年間にわたって通観し日本の庭園美学を勉強する「庭園倶楽部」など、他分野の専門家たちから多くの幅広い知識と考え方を学んでいきながら、新たな現代アートとの接点を探っている。

美術館1階には、展覧会関連グッズや、ポストカード、文房具などを取り扱うミュージアム・ショップ「オン・サンデーズ」がある。オン・サンデーズは、地下1階では美術、写真、建築、デザインの各分野の6千タイトルに及ぶ輸入洋書や限定書籍などを扱うブックショップ及びドリンクや簡単な軽食が楽しめるカフェを展開。アートイベントなども定期的に開催している。

. They realized a number of exhibitions with participation of artists who make contributions to the development of contemporary art, inviting world-leading professionals for making exhibitions. Their wide range of collection includes works by world famous artists from Japan and abroad such as Andy Warhol, Nam June Paik, Keith Haring, Richard Avedon and Robert Frank to name a few.

The museum explores various approaches with wider vision to the world as a place to reconsider the position of Japan in the international art industry as well as to build a well-thouhgt relationship between Japanese and other asian artists.

Besides holding exhibitions regularly, the museum organizes exhibition-related symposiums and workshops as well as other kinds of workshops and lectures throughout the year. One of programs is “One Day Kindergarten + Elementary School” that is a workshop for communication between kids and artists from various fields among many other programs. They seek an access to a new contemporary art through learning a wide variety of ideas and knowledges brought from different professionals from various genres.

There is a shop/cafe space On Sundays: featuring museum goods, postcards and stationaries at the shop located on the 1st floor, and various imported books of art, architecture, photography and design and drinks and food at the shop/cafe space on the basement. They also hold various art events at the basement space.
