When high-end and functionality come together you have every chance for success. If you add to the formula those abilities –that only Swedes know– for getting rid of unnecessary details and elements, in consequence we find classic garments coming anewハイエンドであるとともに、機能的である物に非の打ち所は無い。

. It is appreciable to see Swedes how much they love Nature; some sort of innate contact with it that makes them feel alive and full of joy since being a youth. Immediately, that extrapolates the options to a brand new level of experiences and memories from childhood. That learning experience in the Nature is what Alexander Stutterheim gained from the time spent with his grandfather –fishing and living in the countryside– at Stockholm’s most beautiful area, the archipelago. Today, Alexander is father. Visiting the old cabin, he found the raincoat worn by his grandfather. This garment summed up memories and values, the core of many things he learned. This was a unique opportunity, the idea about producing samples upgrading all the right elements nagged his mind until convince himself about embarking upon a new challenge. “It was raining really heavily on the way to a big meeting with Saab and I was early so I stopped in a cafe for a coffee. I noticed that there weren’t really many people dressed for the rain at all—a couple of people in mackintoshes, but mainly just flimsy umbrellas or papers over the head.” In that spirit and great passion, he gathered the necessary elements to put together somewhat number of handmade samples, whose were sold like gunpowder at his apartment. The brand found home at a small factory in the South of Sweden, where three seamstresses take care of the whole production hand made. “I work in full contrast to mass production and the throw-away mentality, slowly growing together with the seamstresses, who personally number and sign-off each piece.” Now Alexander finds himself in a point of expansion, increasing the product range with some other items to combat rain in certain sartorial elegance. Walking the streets whilst pouring down will be no more an impediment to look sharp and crispy whilst protecting you against adverse circumstances.

Craftsmanship is very valorous aspect within the brand. Which are the pros and cons about producing in Sweden?

Pros: the close communication with the seamstresses and tailors, the short shipping distances, the low minimum volumes, the continuation of the production – since I am not producing my coats in seasons but regularly.
Cons: the price point, production capacity and finding good seamstresses, there are not many around these days.

Instead of mass-produce in China – or somewhere else – all your products are handmade by a couple of seamstresses, which enables you to take care of each item. Is this any boundary for you in order to produce in global scale?

I don’t have much contact with the traditional fashion industry. I do not come from that. Neither do I feel that we have much in common. It is possible they may hope that I am here today and gone tomorrow and that my Don Quixote project will run out of steam. I’ve always asked myself the question – are there other ways to do things? It did not take long before I asked myself if everything really has to be mass-produced and made in season collections, and I decided to make everything the opposite way. It remains to be seen whether this experiment succeeds. Maybe it is too skewed. Or it might be just right. For me, it almost doesn’t matter. I just want to know the truth.

I think the brand is upgrading the product range together with more new items linked to the rain.

I launch a highly exclusive line with the Arvid coat and the Lydia cape, handmade boots as well and soon: the new Stockholm coat which is a rawer take on the Arholma coat. I slowly expand within the rain field.

Melancholy is a double-edged sword, which can help us to discover unexpected things in life. How does it help in your case?

You really have to take that up with my psychiatrist [laughs]. But my life is constantly balancing on the boundary between hubris and catharsis. Elevated joy about the god of little things, and the cold realization that we are going to die. Regardless of profession, friends, money and stuff. During winter, these insights close in as the darkness surrounds us here in the North. The only proper thing to do is to distract oneself. To create something that moves emotions to lighter territory. The very creation keeps the demons at bay. Work is the banister of my life, everything else is transitory. The raincoat project is an almost overly obvious symbol for this – an anti-depressive winter project to make people feel good even in bad weather.

Do you think tough weather conditions encourage creative purposes?

Yes, for me at least it brings out a special kind of melancholia, a soft darkness, not too severe but enough to awaken the demons inside which in their turn fire up my creative energy. Since I need to get away from the bad moods and creating a lighter, brighter world to exist in I actually like tough weather conditions for this. Also I know I really appreciate the good weather better if I have had some rough times earlier. I have read quite a bit about melancholy. It is not to be confused with depression. As I have interpreted it, melancholy precedes a creative state. Restlessness with a worrying factor is not entirely unpleasant, it is even comfortable to relate to, but you still want to get away from it. A rather unpleasant itching whose only ointment is creativity.

What does Swedishness means for you?

I guess we combine style with function, attention to details, having a clean, sober, minimalistic design showing the person wearing the clothes in stead of the clothing itself.

Please namedrop a few places you are happy to mention where you can find Stutterheim worldwide.

We have like 35 stockist in Europe. VOO Store in Berlin and Trunk Clothing in London, 290 SQM in Amsterdam and Frans Boone in Belgium, to mention a few.

For those who never heard about the Stockholm’s archipelago, please brief me about it.

It’s like Mother Nature or cosmos broke a string of pearls over Stockholm…30 000 small, beautiful islands where many Stockholm inhabitants have there summer house and spend there entire vacations BBQ-ing, fishing, sailing, partying, relaxing. In the wintertime many people skate on the ices separating the islands and have fireplaces and read books and drink wine. It’s like a Scandinavian Spa 365 days per year! I love it. My coat “Arholma” is named from the island where I grew up in the summertime and where I found my granddads old coat from the 60s.

Could you be so kind to tell me a few tips for our readers about Stockholm?

Stockholm is the most beautiful city I know. It´s romantic, it’s fresh, it has everything, the sea, the hills, the parks. I would recommend just walking around through the four different islands that the city is based upon. You can have lunch at Babylon at Södermalm, dine at Matbaren, have a drink high up at Gondolen, swing by Il Café for a cortado, eat a herring sandwich at a kiosk in Slussen, drop by Konst-ig (a book store). Visit my REGN store in Södermalm and we are happy to give you lots of other tips.
