静岡のアートやデザインなどのクリエイティビティとビジネスが結びつくような取り組みを発信している「株式会社ヘキサプロジェクト」のメンバーとして活躍するパメラ・ジュール。Hexa project member Pamela Jewell has been approaching to integrate creative works of art and design into business in Shizuoka.静岡には15年在住というアメリカ出身のパメラに静岡の魅力やアートシーンについてインタビュー。
自己紹介と最近の活動内容について教えてください。
アメリカのオマハという街で生まれ育ちました。現在は日本の静岡に住んでいます。太平洋の東西どちら側の国にも住んだことになりますが、大きな都市に住んだことはありません。どんな形のクリエイティブな表現もこよなく愛しており、作品制作のサポートや制作には、10才の頃から携わってます。その頃はオマハの寒い冬のさなか外で何時間も過ごしたり、雪で覆われた木々を描いたり、母が選ぶインテリアカラーを正したりしていました。17才の頃オマハの姉妹都市の静岡へ旅行に来たことで、全くの新しい世界を知ることとなりました。静岡には合わせて15年間住んでいます。景観やライフスタイルや天気も全てオマハとは違っていましたが、静岡での日々は家にいるかのように感じています。教師や政府職員を経て、クリエイティブな表現に関ることがしたいという思いが再燃し、文化交流コミュニケーションとクリエイティブな仕事を組み合わせて何かできないかと模索し始めました。
現在は、デザイン会社兼NPOの「ヘキサプロジェクト」に勤務しています。以前は、静岡市文化・クリエイティブ産業振興センター(CCC)にあるヘキサプロジェクトのブランチオフィスでCCCで行われる展覧会やプロジェクトのコーディネーターとして活動していました。これまで素晴らしいデザイナーの展覧会、プロジェクト、セミナーなどを多くサポートしてきました。
静岡について教えてください。ご自身や仕事をする上でその街で暮らすことについてどう思いますか？
東京と名古屋の中間に位置する静岡は、どちらの都市からも新幹線で１時間程。お茶の生産や富士山の眺めの良い所として有名ですね。北は山、南は海に囲まれた静岡市では、夜の街も楽しめますし、山の温泉や海釣りなど、様々な体験が可能です。天気も穏やかで、街中では雪はめったに降りません。静岡の人はとてものんびりしていて、外ではすこし消極的なところがありますが、どんな人に対してもとてもオープンです。
静岡で好きな場所を教えてください。
ひとつを選ぶのは難しいですが、常磐公園近くの下町が好きな場所の一つです。数多くの小さなショップ、カフェやバーがあり、様々な人が集まってきては、食事や会話を楽しんでいます。ここで人々を見るのは楽しいですね。もう１つお気に入りは、梅ヶ島と井川山です。中心部から１時間〜１時間半くらいのドライブで行くことができます。風や鹿の音しか聞こえないような自然の場所で、温泉もたくさんあります。
静岡のアートシーンについてどう思いますか？
私が務めるヘキサプロジェクトは、2002年より静岡でコンテンポラリー・アートの展覧会や、アートイベントを国内外で開催してきました。しかし、現代美術やデザインシーンは長いこと東京により影が薄いようです。でも伝統芸術や工芸が根強く残っていて、また多くの若者が地元に戻ってきたり、静岡に滞在して、ファッション、インテリア、アートやデザインに関連したビジネスを展開するなどを始めています。最近では、静岡を拠点に国際的に活躍している、ハニカムランプやバルーンランプで有名な共栄(kyouei design)の岡本光市さんがいます。また、多くの小さなギャラリーのオープンやパブリックアートのイベントの開催が毎年行われています。私が勤務している施設のCCCでもクリエイティブな事を促すべくサポートを行っており、静岡をクリエイティブビジネスの新たな拠点としていけたらと思っています。CCCの活動が新たに建設される市立美術館と共に、また、盛んになってきているストリートパフォーマンス・フェスティバルの大道芸ワールドカップも併せて、様々な質の高いアートやカルチャーが成長していくことと思います。

Text: Mariko Takei She reveals the appeal of Shizuoka and the current art scene.
Please tell us yourself and your recent activity.
Born and raised in Omaha, USA and now living in Shizuoka Japan, I have lived on both sides of the Pacific but never in a big city. I love all forms of creative expression and have been creating or supporting others’ work since the age of 10 when I would spend hours outside in Omaha’s cold winter drawing snow-covered trees or correcting my mother’s interior color choices. A trip to Omaha’s sister city, Shizuoka, when I was 17 introduced me to a whole new world. I have spent a combined 15 years in Shizuoka. While the scenery, lifestyle and climate are totally different from Omaha it has always felt like home. After working as a teacher and then a government employee, the urge for more creative expression became strong again and I started searching for ways to combine cross-cultural communication and creative work.
Currently I work for a local design company called “Hexa project“, which also has a NPO of the same name. I had assisted the curator and producer in Hexa project’s branch office at the city’s new creative industry center “the center for creative communications (CCC)” before for which we curate and direct exhibits/projects. I have been privileged to support many amazing designers on exhibits, projects and seminars.
Please tell us about your city, and how about living in your city for yourself/activity.
Situated in between Tokyo and Nagoya, Shizuoka is only about a 1 hour Shinkansen ride away from either city. It is most famous for its green tea and view of Mount Fuji. Surrounded by mountains to the North and the ocean to the South, Shizuoka City really can offer just about any experience one wants – an active nightlife, a quiet mountain onsen retreat, or even deep-sea fishing. The climate is very mild here too and it rarely snows in the city area. People in Shizuoka are very laid back, and though a bit conservative on the outside are very open to people from all walks of life.
Please tell us a favourite places in the city you live and work in.
It is hard to pick just one. One of my favorite places is the old downtown (shitamachi) area near Tokiwa Park. There are many small independtly-owned shops, cafes and bars where people from all walks of life come together. Anyone who enjoys good food, drink and conversation is welcome. The people-watching here is great.
Another favorite spot is the Umegashima or Ikawa mountain areas. Only a 60-90 minute drive from downtown, it is a great escape to nature where the only sound is the wind or deer and there are plenty hot springs where one can relax.
What do you think about the art scene in the city?
While Hexa project has put on contemporary art exhibits and art events in and out of Japan, Shizuoka’s contemporary art and design scene has been overshadowed by Tokyo for a long time. But traditional art and craft has a strong history here and now more young people are returning to (or staying in) Shizuoka and starting fashion, interior, art or design-related businesses. One of the most internationally known young designers from here recently is Kouichi Okamoto of Kyouei Design (balloon lamp, honeycomb lamp, etc.), who still lives and works in Shizuoka City. Many smaller galleries and public art events are opening every year.
CCC, opened in January 2008, is an incubation center for creative/contents business with rental studio offices, exhibit spaces and offers support and education through seminars, workshops and curated-exhibits. It is located downtown right next to the Tokugawa castle grounds.
