国立現代美術館は、韓国近 ･ 現代美術の流れや世界美術の時代的な傾向を同時に受容している国内唯一の国立美術館として、1969年景福宮の殿閣を利用して開館しました。The National Museum of Contemporary Art was established to show the public the desirable direction into which Korean art and its culture should go forward, and make them more advanced.
1973年までは徳寿宮の石造殿を改造して使用していましたが、1986年果川の現在の位置に国際的な規模の施設や野外彫刻場を兼ね備えた美術館を開館し、韓国美術文化の新しい窓を開きました。
1998年には、徳寿宮に国立現代美術館の分館である徳寿宮美術館を開館し、中 ･ 小規模の企画展示会などを開催することになり近代美術専門館として位置づけられています。

It is, thus, fuctioning as a place of new opportuinities for artists, and lifelong social education for citizens.
