The Chapel on the Water was designed by one of the established architects in Japan, Tadao Ando. Nestled in Tomamu where is located in the south area of Hurano, Hokkaido, this chapel was built in 1988, made out of simple materials of stones, woods and glasses「水の教会」は、日本を代表する建築家である安藤忠雄が設計した礼拝堂。北海道、富良野の南に位置するトマムにたたずむ教会は、キリスト教徒の内村鑑三の思想の元, based on the idea of a Japanese christian Kanzo Uchimura.

Kanzo Uchimura thought that the real chapel shouldn’t be caught up with religion, but be based on the principle of non-church. With this idea, the Chapel on the Water was created, that suits to Japanese people who are not fixed on the church style.

You can see concrete walls and huge glass windows facing to the lake. Looking through the window, what you see is the cross and deep forest reflecting in the lake. The 4 concrete Crosses and water on the roof create a fantastic space. Inside of the church looks a form of the non-church style which is quite different from other churches. Tadao Ando did detailed designs for the church including an altar chairs.

In spring, summer and autumn, the huge window will be opened to feel the nature closely. In winter, there will be a lot of snow over the glass windows, and the white view makes this chapel more fantastic one.

In these days the Chapel on the Water is used mainly for marriage. Since its design by Tadao Ando, the chapel gained attractive attention for many people both regionally and nationally to hold a marriage ceremony.
